Prayer for when you doubt God’s work in your life
By Christine Perry

Bible Reading:
“My father is always at his job to this day, and I work too.” John 5:17b niv

Listen or read:

You’ve seen your life, but nothing seems to have happened? You read the Bible, pray, go to church, and you don’t see the outcome you want to see. Maybe you have come to a place in your faith where you even doubt that God is at work. If that’s you, I would like to share a true story with you. Lee Stobel, a former atheist and journalist for the Chicago Tribune, came to Christ after trying to disprove Christianity. After his conversion, he wrote the book “The Case for Christ.”

One day, Lee felt compelled to share the gospel with her former colleagues. He was excited to let his former colleague know how Jesus changed his life. He fully assures that something radical would happen. His ex-co-worker sat on a stone wall when Lee shared his new faith and invited the man to the church. At the end of the conversation, he not only wasn’t upset by atheism, but also blatantly refused to go to church. Lee was totally confused from the office of a former colleague. He really believed he was supposed to share the gospel, so he didn’t see what he wanted to see, but he really believed he was doing what the Lord asked. Was this God’s work or was he led by his own ideas?

Have you been there? Maybe you went out into faith and flattened on your face. Perhaps you did what the Lord asked you to do, and the outcome did not pan out as you would do as they would. You may be wondering if you heard something wrong. You prayed, but still, you can’t hear the answer. I want to remind you, as I remind you. I want to remind you that God is always working with you in the world.

The story about Lee is not over. A few months after Lee had enthusiastically shared his faith with his former colleague, the man approached him and said, “You don’t know me, but you will lead me to Christ.” Lee stood there, confused by the man’s words. The man continued. “I had no job and I knew someone from the Chicago Tribune. I’m a handyman in trade, so they hired me.

Friend, you never know what the Lord is doing. He’s always at work, even when you can’t see it. Don’t give up. Keep trusting him. He is good, and he does good things.

Let’s pray:

Dear Heavenly Father,
Please forgive me for doubting you. You can’t see the big picture, but you can. Thank you for always working. Thank you for not sleeping or sleeping. Thank you for keeping our ways and for leading us into the path of righteousness for your name. When we are weak, you are strong and thank you. When we are short, you are grateful that we have everything we need. Thank you for being able to work even while we are rested. Help us to rest and know you, as you say to first seek your kingdom and your righteousness, and all this, our daily needs will be added to us.

Thank you for starting to the end. Thank you for knowing what is best for us. Thank you for not forgetting us. But I pray that you will help us to trust you and be busy loving, serving and caring for those around us. Help us think more about others than ourselves. Lord, we love you. Help us become like you. Please help us to speak slower, listen quickly, and slower anger. I need your help every day. Thank you for never giving up on us. I’m grateful. Amen!
