The First Presidency announced that the dedication of the Torreon Mexico Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be held on November 22.

Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will dedicate the temple.

Prior to the inauguration ceremony, an open house will be held from October 22nd to November 7th, excluding Sundays. A media day is also scheduled for Monday, October 19th, and invited guests will tour the sacred structure from October 20th to 21st. These dates were published on ChurchofJesusChrist.org on July 27th.

As previously announced, another Mexican temple will be dedicated in the same month as the Torreon temple dedication. Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will dedicate the San Luis Potosi Mexico Temple on November 1.

Two more temple dedications are currently planned for November of this year, for a total of four dedications that month.

The Torreon Temple will be dedicated by Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on November 22, the same day as the Modesto California Temple. Earlier that month, the Wichita Kansas Temple was dedicated on November 1 by Elder Patrick Kearon of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

About Torreon Temple

Torreon’s principal home is a one-story building measuring approximately 10,000 square feet. The building is located on a 0.9-acre site at the corner of Paris Avenue and Amsterdam Avenue in Gomez Palacio, Durango, just west of Torreon.

On April 4, 2021, then-Church President Russell M. Nelson announced this House of the Lord in Torreon. It was one of 20 temple sites in Queretaro that he identified at general conference in April 2021, including another temple in Mexico.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Torreon Temple was held on December 10, 2022, and was officiated by Elder Hugo Montoya, a General Authority Seventy and the Mexico Area President at the time.

“As you can see, this building will be beautiful,” Elder Montoya said in his groundbreaking address, adding that the temple will be “made of quality materials and built to the highest standards. But it is not the building itself that we can take joy in, but the ordinances and covenants of what happens inside the building.”

Elder Montoya is accompanied (right to left) by event speaker Sergio Pedrosa. Event coordinators Julio Cesar Jasso and Lourdes Gutierrez. Juan Gomez Junco, communicator. Alicia Gamboa, City Trustee; Director of works by Juan Salazar and Gomez Palacio. Mr. Marco Avila, Deputy General Manager of Gomez Palacio Factory, and Mr. Abdalais Lee of Maror Arquitectos Office. Event speakers Jimena García and Josué García.

Of Mexico’s 27 temples in various stages, 14 have been consecrated in Mexico City, Colonia Juárez, Ciudad Juárez, Hermosillo, Oaxaca, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Tampico, Villahermosa, Mérida, Veracruz, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Tijuana, and Puebla.

Mexico will hold two dedication ceremonies in November, bringing the total number of operating temples in the country to 16 with the addition of the San Luis Potosi and Torreon temples. Another Lord’s house is under construction for Queretaro, Mexico.

This leaves ten houses of the Lord in the planning and design stages: Culiacán, Mexico City Benemerito, Cuernavaca, Pachuca, Toluca, Tula, Cancun, Chihuahua, Juchitan de Zaragoza, and Reynosa.

Missionary work in Mexico began in 1875, when seven missionaries were sent to Mexico. The first five members in Mexico were baptized in Hermosillo, Sonora in 1877. A branch was soon established in Mexico City in 1879. The country’s first stake, the Juarez Stake, was established in 1895.

There are currently more than 1.5 million Latter-day Saints in nearly 1,900 wards and branches in Mexico.
