Prayer to know God as Jehovah Jireh
Written by Christine F. Perry

Bible reading:
“And Abraham called the name of the place, The Lord Will Provide. As it is said to this day, ‘In the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.'” Genesis 22:14 NKJV

Listen or read below:

For those who are not familiar with this verse, God tells Abraham that he will have a son. Abraham waits 25 years for the promise to be fulfilled. His wife Sarah was “past childbearing age” when she became pregnant.

Several years after this miracle was born, God told Abraham to take Isaac and offer a sacrifice. Abraham complies and takes Isaac on a journey to Mount Moriah, where he binds Isaac and sacrifices him. The angel of the Lord with a knife in his hand gets Abraham’s attention and shows him the ram stuck in the bushes. God provided and revealed His name in Greek as “The Lord Who Provides” or “Jehovah Jireh.”

Almost every time I think of gilets, I think of funding. But I realized that there are many ways God has provided. He can provide a vehicle, a home, a spouse, a friend, a baby, a job, a purpose, a direction.

And let’s say it is not God’s will to give us what we ask for. God still gives us peace in the storm, comfort in the sorrow, and support when we feel like we have hit rock bottom.

The Lord lacks nothing. God has everything we need, and He is all we need.

Rather than running away to people, places, or things that fulfill us, let’s look to God for everything we need in every situation we face.

I recently got married after waiting for a spouse for 20 years. We dated for two years before getting married. As one of our closest friends stood up for a toast, he said: “Ever since we started dating, this day has felt like an eternity. But that’s our opinion, isn’t it? The Lord didn’t watch a clock like we do.” He went on to say in Ecclesiastes 3 that there is a time for everything. The day we got married was perfect timing.

The Lord knows what we need. He knows exactly when we need it. he is not late He works behind the scenes. God wants us to trust that He can and will provide.

However, God the Father has gone above and beyond our needs by providing a way back to God through Jesus Christ. If God the Father had done nothing else for us, sending his only begotten Son would have been enough. We do not have to pay the penalty for our sins. Because Jesus, the perfect sacrifice, offered Himself for us (something we could never do no matter how hard we tried). His blood atoned for our sins and satisfied God’s wrath.

Just as that ram took Isaac’s place, 2000 years later Jesus took our place on the same mountain.

let’s pray

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for being you. Thank you for always giving us everything we need and always having everything we need. Father, I don’t know what each of you needs today, but you are needed. If they are tired, give them patience and encouragement. If you are looking down, raise your head. If you’re waiting, give them joy while they wait. If they are grieving, I pray that You will be their comfort. If they are in a storm, please give them your peace. If you lack funds, please provide them.

Father, help us to know You and to see You as Jehovah Jireh. Lord, open our eyes to see how You have already provided. Thank you for giving salvation to all who confess with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in their heart.

we love you. Help us to trust You and know You as Jehovah Jireh.

Amen!
