After a Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is built or undergoes major renovation, it is opened for public viewing before it is dedicated or rededicated. After the dedication or rededication, members of the Church with a temple recommend may enter the church to perform sacred ordinances.
The San Diego California Temple will be rededicated at 10 a.m. Sunday, August 23, with a rebroadcast at 2 p.m., but the presiding authority has not been announced.
Several other temple public open houses are underway or scheduled to begin in the coming weeks. Due to limited parking, reservations are recommended for the Yorba Linda California Temple Open House. This open house will run through May 23rd.
Open houses that do not require reservations include the Bacolod Philippines Temple, the Willamette Valley Oregon Temple, and the Cleveland Ohio Temple. (See below for details about open house.)
About the San Diego California Temple
The San Diego California Temple is the third in California and the Church’s 45th temple still in operation.
On April 7, 1984, President Gordon B. Hinckley, then Second Counselor in the First Presidency, announced the temple at the beginning of the April 1984 general conference.
President Ezra Taft Benson, as President of the Church, presided over the temple’s groundbreaking ceremony on February 27, 1988. His second counselor, President Thomas S. Monson, dedicated the site.
After construction, an open house was held from February 20 to April 3, 1993. Of the 650,000 people expected to tour the building, the open house attracted about 720,000 people. The San Diego California Temple was dedicated in 23 sessions from April 25 to April 30, 1993. President Hinckley, then First Counselor in the First Presidency, presided over 13 sessions, and President Monson presided over the remaining 10 sessions.
The San Diego Temple closed on July 31, 2023 for extensive renovations. At the time of its closure, the temple was 169 feet tall and 72,000 square feet in size, with two central minarets surrounded by four smaller minarets. Highlighted by Interstate 5 in Southern California, the temple sits on 7.2 acres near the suburbs of La Jolla, north of San Diego.
