President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was born May 31, 1933, in Princeton, New Jersey.

President Eyring earned a degree in physics from the University of Utah and served two years in the United States Air Force. He received his doctorate in business administration from Harvard University in 1963. He married Kathleen Johnson in July 1962 in the Logan Utah Temple. They are the parents of four sons and two daughters. She passed away on October 15, 2023.

In the First Presidency, he served as second counselor to President Gordon B. Hinckley, first counselor to President Thomas S. Monson, and second counselor to President Russell M. Nelson. President Dallin H. Oaks appointed President Eyring as his first counselor on October 14, 2025. President Eyring was sustained by the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in April 1995 and has served as a General Authority since April 1985.

Today, in honor of President Eyring’s 93rd birthday, we are sharing nine of his quotes from this past year.

1. Peace can come.

Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency, meets with Her Excellency Suriya Chindawongse, Thai Ambassador to the United States, at the Church Administration Building in Salt Lake City. | Leslie Nilsson, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

“Each time you return to the temple, you will come to know more about the Father and Him through the Spirit. The peace God promises can come even when the storms of life assail us.”

— May 3, 2026, social media post after dedicating the Lyndon Utah Temple.

2. Temple and obedience

Prior to the dedication of the Lyndon Utah Temple on Sunday, May 3, 2026, President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency, will be joined by Elder Stephen R. Bangerter, a General Authority Seventy and executive director of the Church's temple division, on the left, and Elder Jorge T. “The temple experience increases our desire as humble children of God to submit our hearts and wills to God. As we wholeheartedly obey what we are taught in the temple, it enables us to receive the gift of peace.”

3. “They are anxious to bless us.”

— “Prayer for Peace” April 2026 General Conference

4. Children will remember

“Daily family prayer, family scripture study, and sharing your testimony in sacrament meeting are easy and effective when your children are young. As they grow older, they will remember the hymns you sing together. Even more than they remember the music, they will remember the scriptures and the words of their testimony.”

— Social Media Post, January 5, 2026

5. Waterways of God’s Grace
