Tavera told CBN News that his love for magic tricks began at an early age, when he began participating in various shows and learning how to perform different tricks. As he grew up, he stopped playing and performing. And it wasn’t until one day, decades later, that a friend performed a magic trick that Tavera, then an adult, rediscovered his love for magic tricks.
“One day we were in a coffee shop and[my friend]pulled out a deck of cards and a coin, and all of a sudden it felt like there were people of all ages, different skin colors, different backgrounds all around us,” Tavera said. “And I thought that this simple thing brought all these people together, because I saw them become like children in that moment.”
For some reason, this simple moment was like an “explosion” in Tavera’s heart, and he began to remember his love for magic tricks again.
“I felt like God was emphasizing this,” he said. “So I went home and told my wife, and I was like, ‘Baby, I’m a magician now.'” That’s what every wife wants to hear, right? ”
Rather than denigrating or belittling his plans, his wife did everything in her power to “take them seriously.” She said she also received a word from the Lord regarding this matter.
“One day she went for a run and was praying, and she said, ‘I don’t know why this sounds crazy, but I feel like God told me that if I do all these magic tricks and stuff, I can win America’s Got Talent,'” Tavera said, noting that the information she received at the time was wild, considering she didn’t want to be on the show. “It was crazy. I thought, ‘I’m not even going to win this show, I’m not even going to be on the show.'” But my wife is always right. ”
Tavera, who was doing homeless service work at the time, never thought she would be able to appear on the show, let alone win. But God had other plans. Two and a half years after his wife felt God’s prompting, Tavera appeared on “America’s Got Talent” and won. This experience skyrocketed his career and proved the message his wife received to be true.
The popular magician also spoke about his path to Christianity, saying his parents’ marriage was “a mess” when he was a child.
“It’s just drugs, alcohol and extramarital affairs. My father was a drug dealer,” he said. “That’s how my parents met. Her friend…was getting drugs from my dad. When I was just starting out in life, my parents were completely dysfunctional.”
But Tavera said they came to the Lord because a Christian couple came into their lives and helped them get back on their feet and get sober. Suddenly drugs, confusion and rage took over.
“As I grew up, I watched my parents grow with the Lord,” he said. “I saw all this nonsense being removed from my family and I thought, ‘This is crazy.’ So by the time I got to the age where a lot of my friends wanted to party and sleep and things like that, I was like, ‘I don’t want anything to do with this.'”
In the end, Tavera believes it was all a “blessing from God” to keep him out of the turmoil that has plagued his family for far too long. See his full story above.
