When sister Tracy Y. Browning, the second counselor for the major presidency, took part in a major service effort at San Rafael California stock this month, she was impressed by how older children lead.

“These are those who made the covenant of baptism, and you see them truly using their disciples in a meaningful way in God’s kingdom and in the church,” Sister Browning said. “It was an important part of them to understand that the Gospel needed them, and their talents and their time and consecrated efforts in the kingdom.”

On Saturday, August 2nd, children and families from two branches in four wards and piling met at a Northern California stake center to support other children in the community.

The children lead at each of the five service stations set up in the cultural hall where participants are located.

When older children took the lead, younger children could see examples of service and leadership.

Viviana Amador, the stake’s primary president, said children need to work in the gospel.

“And to work as they need to lead, some of the leads will speak out, introduce and introduce prayers, and I believe they can do that, because that’s what he did.

Evelyn Cole, 9, said she was scared to talk to everyone at first. “And I was worried about forgetting my words. But then I felt really happy – and ready to do that again.”

“I was nervous, but I was excited at the same time. I wasn’t as scary as I thought it was,” said 11-year-old James Wilcock.

Ezra Cole, 11, said one of the favorite parts of the activity is encouraging younger children. “It was fun to see their smiles and see people enjoying helping others.”

“I felt like I was doing the right thing.”

Stake members and their friends donated supplies for primary service activities that helped children in their community, explained Lindy Burgon, a stake just serve specialist. The stock focuses on summer summer through JustServe, a website and app that allows volunteers to find opportunities around them.

“We’re involved with JustServe and we’ve met these community organizations, so we knew right away who we could connect with and bring it together,” Burgon said.

She said leaders used major presidency invitations as guides. And then the children talked about how they could serve their neighbors again in the future.

Karma Cole, 7, said, “I feel like I’m doing the right thing and Jesus is proud of me.”

Grayson Walker, 6, said:

Mitchell Walker, 10, said he feels good about helping other children in need. “It made me realize how blessed I am.” He also interviewed Sister Browning and was excited to learn that he loves to read the mystery as he does.

“Jesus needs you.”

After the service, a conference was held in the chapel, and the children also led the conference, Bulgon said.

“It was a big deal for them,” she said. “We think these are small things, but they are small pieces that will help them realize their potential and bring them closer to Christ.”

9-year-old Jace Nielsen held a meeting in the chapel. He said he was nervous, but when he saw his friend he felt their support.

He then spoke about the experience at a Sacramental Conference and explained that he felt that he could do more for the Church.

“I want to encourage all the major children here to be like Jesus and do the right thing,” he said in his speech. “Jesus needs you even if you’re young. You can serve others and help those in need, just like we did with our service projects.”

Children lead with prayer

On the Friday night before the primary service activity, Sister Browning prayed to key children in eight California stakes, including Eureka, Fairfield, Napa, San Rafael, Santa Rosa, Ukiah, Vacaville and Woodland.

Sister Browning and Elder Sheikfried A. Naumann were the main children in the church’s 70-person area of the Western United States region, with all other participants in prayer being the main children.

The children prayed, played the piano, led music, held meetings, and introduced Sister Browning.

Sister Browning taught the children more about how the temple is the Lord’s house and how they could be prepared to enter his house by honouring the covenant of baptism.

Elder Nauman said that devotion reminded him of the Savior’s words in 3 Nephi 11:37. He testified about the impact children can have worldwide through acts of justice.

We are ready for a long table and stage for primary service activities at San Rafael California Stake Center on Saturday, August 2, 2025.
