Prayer for peace when finances feel tight
Amanda Idolman

Bible Reading:
“The Blessing of the Lord will become rich, and he will not add sorrow to it.” – Proverbs 10:22

Read or listen to the following:

There is no doubt that money isn’t moving forward like it used to be. Your family may be growing, like economy, inflation, or like me, but your financial needs seem to continue to grow for your family and your budget feels tight. I feel like I’m always trying to find new ways to “hack your budget.” We’re planning on side gigs that can be added to schedules and new budgeting tools that will help us spend our money better. Really, it can make you feel tired.

The responsibility to manage our finances can stress me. That stress begins to occupy my thoughts and ultimately my peace is destroyed as I am overwhelmed by the financial needs of my family. I’m sure you can relate to this. When our peace shakes because our spreadsheets are unbalanced, it is time to pray to the Lord and fill our hearts with the truth of His words. Sometimes we can’t immediately improve our situation and it’s uncomfortable. Sometimes the economic hurdles we face are caused by negligence. These are often the most challenging times for trusting in God to offer us. We need to cling to his peace, not to be wiped out by fear.

When we worry about our money, one truth we remember is that when we are children of God, we are blessed richly because we are God. This world and its troubles die, but we have a safe house that God prepares for us in heaven. When overwhelmed by the temporary tensions of financial needs, we can meditate on God’s present and eternal provision.

1 Timothy 6:10 says, “For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, and it is through this craving that through this craving, he has thrust himself with many breads away from faith.”

In our money-obsessed culture, it can be felt unwise to ignore ourselves from the serious responsibility of our finances, but Jesus invites us to trust him with our needs. Furthermore, we are warned that loving money can separate us from Jesus and open the door to entering our lives for evil. Accepting God’s peace is one way to keep our hearts pure. Jesus lived recklessly with money, and in the end Judas chose to betray him. Judas’ love for cash defeated his love for his Savior. Let us remind you that while we should be responsible for our resources and be diligent, we should focus on being able to separate us from our original love.

Psalm 37:16-17 states, “The little thing that the righteous has more than many wicked ones will break the arms of the wicked ones, but the Lord will support the righteous ones.”

The greatest treasure we have is our relationship with Jesus. At the end of our lives, we can learn that Jesus is more important than anything else that we have occurred in our bank account. Let us focus on righteous life and trust that God is sufficient to provide us with everything else that we need in this life. Please accept God’s peace and remember that God is our first love and ultimate provider, and that we can trust him.

Let’s pray:

Father, we will release you our fears, concerns and anxiety about our finances. We know you are sufficient for us. You forgive us when you don’t properly manage what you give us. When it comes to financial management, we can guide us when we need to learn new patterns and acquire more skills. We believe it provides the right opportunity to acquire what we need when considering our future. We will put everything we have at your feet and ask you to lead us forward. Please forgive us for loving you and love money more than trusting you. Let your peace cover us, and let our worship recenter our worship, and concentrate on your kingdom before you worry about building our things. Amen.
