What does it mean to walk with Christ?

“This happens every time we reach out to our Heavenly Father in prayer, every time we open our scriptures and find Him, when we hear His voice and act and obey rather than ignore or postpone, and when we embrace the gift of daily repentance,” said General Youth President Timothy L. Ferns when the 2026 Youth Theme was announced in September.

The youth theme for 2026 is “Walk with Me” based on Moses 6:34. “Behold, my Spirit is upon you; therefore all your words I will justify; and the mountains shall flee from before you, and the rivers turn their course; and you shall abide in me, and I in you; therefore walk with me.”

To help youth and youth leaders better understand the 2026 youth theme, here are seven quotes from general conference talks on walking with Christ. This includes a talk by Emily Bell Freeman, Young Women general president.

1. Serve His Way

“What does it mean to walk with the Lord? It means to do what He does, to serve Him as He serves. He sacrificed His comfort to bless those in need, so that’s what we are trying to do. He is ignored by society, He also seemed to pay particular attention to those who were shunned. So we should try to do the same. He boldly and lovingly bore witness to the true doctrine he received from the Father. So should we. “Come to me” (Matthew 11:28), and we say to everyone, “Come to him.”

— President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency, “Walk with Me,” April 2017 General Conference

2. Obey God’s commandments and keep covenants

“Coming into and walking with the Savior highlights two important aspects of discipleship: (1) obeying God’s commandments; (2) Remembering and keeping the sacred covenants that unite us with the Father and the Son…Jesus beckons to each of us, “Come, follow me” (Luke 18:22) and “walk with me” (Moses 6:34).As we move forward in faith, we are blessed with strength, guidance, protection, and peace.”

—Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, “Abide in me, and I in you, so walk with me,” April 2023 General Conference

3. Become holy

“Our gospel is a gospel of joy and holiness in everyday life. Holiness sets things apart for a divine purpose. But holiness also invites us to infuse our daily lives with the sacred, to enjoy our daily bread among the thistles and thorns of this world. To walk with the Lord, we must be holy, because the Lord is holy. To help us become holy, the Lord invites us to walk with him.”

— Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, “Holiness to the Lord in Everyday Life,” October 2024 General Conference

4. Learn about and follow the Lord.

“The Lord has made wonderful promises to all who seek to learn about Him and incorporate His Word into their lives, including us. … So, as we make a sincere and continuous effort to learn about the Savior and to imitate His example, we promise in His name that His divine attributes will be imprinted on our minds and hearts, and that we will become more like Him and walk with Him.”

— Elder Ulises Soares of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, “Awe of Christ and His Gospel,” April 2022 General Conference

5. Remember you are not alone

“When the Lord called Enoch to travel through this land and testify of the Lord, Enoch hesitated. He was just a young man and slow of speech. How could he walk that path in his condition? He was blinded by what was broken within him. The Lord’s answer to what was holding him back was simple and immediate: ‘Walk with me.’ (See Moses 6:23-34.) Like Enoch, we must remember that the One who was broken and broken for us is the one who forgives. But God does not ask us to face these challenges alone. He invites us to walk with Him, no matter the weight of our story or our current path.”

— Emily Bell Freeman, Young Women general president, “Walking in a Covenant Relationship with Christ,” October 2023 General Conference

6. Accept his will

“When we accept His will, He shows us how to walk with Him. … Accepting His will in place of our own is the key to finding joy in any situation. The simple faith we have in Jesus Christ as we begin to learn about Him remains with us as we face life’s challenges. Our faith in Him can and will guide us through life’s complexities.”

— Elder Larry S. Kacher, General Authority Seventy, “Ladder of Faith,” April 2022 General Conference

7. Come to know God

“Dear brothers and sisters, Jesus wants us to know Him, for He is the only name under heaven by which we are saved. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. There is no Father but Him. You can’t go back to Him! Jesus is the only way! That’s why Jesus beckons, “Come to Me” (Matthew 11:28), “Follow Me” (Matthew 16:24), and “Walk with me.” “Learn about Me” (Moses 6:34) and “Learn about Me” (Matthew 11:29).”

— Elder Jonathan S. Schmidt, General Authority Seventy, “As They Know You,” October 2022 General Conference
