The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is assisting with emergency efforts after massive wildfires and landslides in Argentina.

Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate due to wildfires in Argentina’s Andean province of Chubut, the Associated Press reports. The fires have destroyed more than 120,000 acres of Argentina’s forests in the past month and a half.

The church has donated essential equipment to the Trevelin Volunteer Firefighters Association to strengthen emergency response and support the work of frontline workers.

The donation included tools and supplies requested by the volunteer firefighters themselves, according to a news release from the church’s Spanish-language newsroom. Donated items include chainsaws, radios, satellite dishes, waterproof tents, and bunk beds with mattresses.

The purpose of the donation is to help improve firefighter communication, organization and safety.

According to a report from a local news agency, 600 firefighters are working to extinguish the fire, but due to the steep terrain, many specialized fire brigade teams have been called in.

Trevelin Volunteer Fire Brigade also thanked the church for the donation, saying the equipment would allow them to continue serving the community.

The church and its members are also assisting with another natural disaster in Argentina. In Comodoro Rivadavia, one landslide had already caused damage on the coast of the province after heavy rains in January.

The church is also working to support evacuated families. According to local news reports, 90 families were evacuated on January 18th and are still evacuated.

As part of the humanitarian response, church members collected 500 hygiene kits and delivered them to two evacuation centers set up by local authorities.

Many young single adults and members of the Comodoro Rivadavia Argentina Stake participated in the service project, according to a news release from the church’s Spanish-language newsroom.
