A prayer to remember God’s faithfulness in Passover
By Lynette Kittle

Bible Reading:
“And when your children ask you, “What does this ceremony mean to you?” Then they say to them, “It was a Passover sacrifice to the Lord, and he passed the house of the Israelites in Egypt and saved our house when he attacked the Egyptians.” Then the people bowed and worshiped” – Exodus 12:26-27

Read or listen to the following:

God called the Jews and observed Passover, a symbolic celebration with the sacrificial lamb, God’s lamb, to observe Passover. Passover, or the Hebrew Pesach, begins every year on the 15th day of the Hebrew Month, which falls in March or April. It celebrates with remembering and celebrating God passing the firstborn of the Israelites in the final of the 10 plagues visiting Egypt, from Egypt’s bondage and departure from slavery.

“This is the day you commemorate, and for the generations to come, you will celebrate it as a festival to the Lord – a permanent ordinance (Exodus 12:14).

God gave very specific instructions regarding the blood of the Lamb’s sacrifice. “Then they take a piece of blood and place it on the side and on the frame of the house. He instructed Israel to: “On the same night, I will pass through Egypt and defeat all the firstborn, both people and animals. I will give judgment to all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. It will become a sign of the house where you are.

Passover Results

As God foretold, “At midnight, the Lord struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well. Pharaoh and all his officials and all the Egyptians got up during the night, and there was loud wailing in Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead” (Exodus 12:29-30).

After the Passover, the Egyptians were unable to remove the Jews quickly enough. “During the night, Pharaoh summons Moses and Aaron, saying, “I will leave my people, you and the Israelites! Worship the Lord as you have requested.”

Through the blood of the sacrificial lamb, Passover revealed God’s power over life and death. “The Egyptians urged the people to hurry up and leave the country. “Otherwise,” they said, “We will all die!” (Exodus 12:33).

The role of Jesus in Passover

Jesus, as recorded in the New Testament, observed the Passover while living on Earth and knew what was coming. “It was just before the Passover. Jesus knew it was time to leave this world and go to the Father. He loved him himself in the world, so he loved them to the end.” John the Baptist also recorded in John 1:29, “The next day John saw Jesus come towards him and said, “Look, and I will take away the sins of the world!” ”

Jesus’ crucifixion occurred during Passover and fulfilled his prophecy. As Christians, we remember God’s faithfulness to all who placed the blood of the sacrificial lamb at their door. Remembering Passover prepares our hearts to celebrate Easter by remembering how Jesus’ blood covers our sins and frees us from death.

Passover reminds us of how our Messiah, our Passover Lamb, came and gives us a reason to rejoice! “And by this we have once been made holy for all, through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ” (Hebrews 10:10).

Let’s pray:

Dear Father, we praise your faithfulness in saving us through all generations! Thank you for covering the house of the Israelites covered in the blood of the sacrificial lamb, the Lamb of God, Jesus, and his bloody sacrifices that cover the sins of the world. Hebrews 10:14 reminds us, “For he made holy sacrifices to perfect the holy men forever.” We are deeply grateful to you to love us, to send you the perfect sacrifice, to red us and give us eternal life. Soften our hearts today and every day, remember your faithfulness and tell others what you have done for us. In the name of Jesus, Amen
