Prayer for Freedom from the Chain of Addiction
by: Amanda Idlman

Bible reading: “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and there is freedom as to where His Spirit is.” -2 Corinthians 3:17

Read or listen to the following:

Addiction is a way of involving us in our practice of stealing the life of our enemies. When we are struggling with addiction, we enslaved the chemicals our bodies depend on. It could be the highs we gain during drugs, the instant joy from being involved in porn, or the temporary satisfaction that occurs when we induce ourselves to an overdose. If we hand over life to suit these needs, we lose the ability to live with self-control, and the consequences of this confinement are devastating.

In our home, we raise children who have lost a devastating vast portion of their stories as a result of their first family addiction. My heart is constantly grieving my children for the unknown that lasts for life. Their identity parts were stolen as addiction ruled. The physical, emotional and mental harm caused to their small developed bodies are their small development, as the chemicals deprived of their first parents of love them as they needed. I cannot undo what was done, but I can pray that God brings freedom and redness to the place of their story and the story of their birth parents whose enemies intended for evil.

If I walked with someone who has struggled or hurt as a result of addiction, I am also saddened with you. There is also a heavy, heavy sadness that we must surrender to our Father, for those who desire freedom and healing for those we love. He is our comforter and a person who puts a great burden.

There is hope! God of all miracles, just like us, wants that those who we care about will find freedom and experience while we are here in the land of living. Where God’s Spirit is, there is freedom. He has the power to rewire our minds and bodies and provide the support we need to remain faithful to our new, free life.

God cares for the broken man, corrects the injustice that humans do not have the power to redeem himself, and is always at his job. In our daughter’s story, her birth father found God in prison while he was in foster care. After years of hardship, he gave his life to the Lord and God began to do what only he could! He is a creative God.

Now, two years have passed since he left prison, and a year he was able to start knowing his daughter again, he remains pretty! There is joy in his life that his daughter is in his story despite the broken things that were once caused by addiction. There is so much to their story, so we just happen to be something God can do! After walking this path of foster parents and adoption, I am sure God wants to bring freedom and is actively pursuing those stuck in dark places.

The first step to freedom for ourselves and for those we love is prayer. The prayer of the saint is powerful. We must invite God to shine in places that only God can. To show His love in a way that only we can see. And to provide hope and future to children who are victims of this evil.

If you are stuck in a cycle of lies, helplessness and dependence, ask for help. Freedom comes as a gift from God and learns new ways of life in the context of the community. Accountability is needed to overcome our flesh and the power we want to bind.

Let’s pray:
Dear Lord, when your spirit lives within us, we are grateful that we have access to the miracle-making power that brings freedom from addiction of all kinds. We ask that your healing powers work in our lives and in the lives of those we love. Bring all the dark things into the light. It brings repentance. Let your love cover all of us roughly. Recover what is lost in our lives because of sin. Protect people around addiction, not allowing evil to steal from innocent people. I am grateful for your work every day and write stories filled with red and grace. Let’s do it again, yes. Amen.
