To be honest, the wait is exhausting. Waiting for something can feel like an eternity, whether it’s a job, a relationship, a breakthrough, or healing. And it can feel even harder when you’re waiting on God’s timing. You are trusting in something bigger than yourself, something you cannot see and control.

I’ve been there. I have spent most of my life feeling stuck, wondering when God would answer my prayers. And I know I’m not alone. We all face moments when we feel like we’re in a sacred waiting room.

But this is the truth. Waiting doesn’t have to be a passive experience. It doesn’t have to be a time of frustration or stagnation. In fact, it can be a period of incredible growth, change, and even joy. The key is to change your perspective and learn how to succeed while you wait.

So what can you do?Here are five methods that have helped me. I hope it will encourage you too.

1. Accept the present moment

It’s so easy to think about the future, what we want, and when God will answer our prayers. However, if you do that, you will miss out on the beauty and opportunity of this moment. Philippians 4:11-13 says: “I don’t say this because I’m in trouble. I’ve learned to be content in any situation. I know what it’s like to be poor, and I know what it’s like to be rich. I have learned the secret of being content in all circumstances, whether I live in abundance or in lack. I can do all this through the One who gives me strength.” We must learn contentment and find strength in Christ in every situation.

God has you exactly where you are for a reason. He has a purpose for you now in this season of waiting. Your job is to bloom where you are placed and make the most of the opportunities in front of you. Matthew 6:34 says, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself; each day has troubles enough in itself.” This clearly emphasizes that we must learn to focus on the present instead of worrying about an uncertain future.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 also says, “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven.” This confirms that there is a specific time for everything, even if you wait.

Here you will learn how to embrace the present moment of your life. Focus on the blessings you have, not what you lack. Look for ways to serve others and use your gifts and talents to make a difference in the world.

2. Cultivate spiritual practices

Waiting can be emotionally and mentally draining. It’s easy to become discouraged, doubt God’s goodness, and lose hope. That’s why it’s so important to take care of your soul during this time, cultivating spiritual practices that nourish and strengthen you. Psalm 23:3 says, “The Lord refreshes my soul; He guides me along the right path for His name’s sake.” This confirms God’s role in refreshing and guiding our souls.

Think of it this way. If you don’t water, weed, and fertilize, you can’t expect your garden to thrive. The same applies to your soul. You need to give it the nutrients it needs to grow.

So spend your time praying, reading the Bible, and listening to worship music. Psalm 19:7 says, “The law of the Lord is perfect and refreshing for the soul; his commandments are trustworthy and make the simple wise.” This passage beautifully emphasizes the refreshing and wisdom-giving nature of God’s Word, and by utilizing these practices our souls will be deeply refreshed.

You also need to connect with other believers who will encourage and support you. In the meantime, practice silence and solitude and give yourself permission to just be still in God’s presence.

There was a time in my life when I too felt disconnected from God and felt very empty and dry. At that time, I decided to change my mood by visiting my sick neighbor and praying with him. This strengthened my faith and allowed me to reconnect with God.

3. Redefine success

Our culture often defines success in terms of accomplishment, recognition, and material wealth. But God’s definition of success is very different. He values our character over our accomplishments. He values our hearts more than our resumes.

Therefore, I look at waiting as an opportunity to redefine success and align it with God’s values. It’s a chance to focus on becoming the person God wants you to be, rather than simply achieving the worldly things you desire. If you look at 1 Samuel 16:7, we read, “But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not be concerned about his appearance or his stature, because I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at what men see. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'” This is perfect proof that God’s focus is on the heart, not the outward appearance. He is not interested in our worldly achievements, but rather in our spiritual achievements.

As true believers, we must ask ourselves the question, “What does it mean to be successful in God’s eyes?” How can we grow in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control during this time of waiting?

When I was starting my writing career, I thought the true measure of a writer’s success was the number of books they sold, the awards they won, and the recognition they received. But then I realized that they were temporary and ultimately unsatisfying. I realized that true success is using my writing to serve others, give them hope, and share God’s love. Galatians 5:22-23 confirms this. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law.” That’s it. The true measure of success is the fruit of the Spirit.

4. Seek Godly Counsel and Community

Waiting can be lonely. It’s easy to feel like you’re the only one struggling, the only one facing unanswered prayers. That is why it is so important to seek godly counsel and connect with a supportive community.

Talk to trusted friends, family, and leaders who can provide wisdom, encouragement, and prayers. Join a small group or Bible study to connect with other believers and share your struggles.

You know, God created us for community. We need each other to grow, learn, and get through difficult times.

This reminds me of a testimony someone recently gave in a church service. As she waited for her husband to find a job after his layoff, she felt like she was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. She was stressed, anxious, and overwhelmed. But then the women in our church’s welfare group listened to her suffering, prayed for her, supported her financially and materially, and some even offered personal, practical advice. And these acts reminded her that she was not alone and that God was still in control. Their support was invaluable during that difficult time.

5. Remember God’s Sovereignty

Ultimately, growing while waiting on God’s timing comes down to trusting His sovereignty. It’s about remembering that God is in control, that He knows what He’s doing, and that He has a good plan for your life.

Even when things look uncertain, even when we don’t understand why things are happening the way they are, we can trust that God is working behind the scenes. He is molding you, molding you, and preparing you for something great.

And while you’re at it, I urge you to hold tight to this truth. “And we know that in all things God works for good to those who love him, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

There have been countless times in my life where I have not understood why God allows certain events to occur. Yes, I questioned his wisdom. Many times I doubted God’s love and even got angry with Him. But as I look back, I see how those difficult times shaped me, strengthened me, and prepared me for the blessings to come. And frankly, today I learned with confidence that God’s timing is always perfect, even when it doesn’t make sense to me.

Waiting Well: The Choices We Make

Waiting on God’s timing isn’t easy, but it doesn’t have to be a passive and frustrating experience. It can be a time of growth, change, and even joy. You can grow while you wait by embracing the present moment, protecting your soul, redefining success, seeking godly counsel, and trusting in God’s sovereignty.

Remember God is with you. he loves you And God has good plans for your life. Trust God and allow Him to work in and through you, even while you wait.
