Announcements and news before April 2026 general conference
What happened during General Conference in October 2025?
Russell M. Nelson, President of the Church, passed away on September 27, 2025, the weekend before the October 2025 general conference.
Upon the death of a President of the Church, the First Presidency is dissolved and the counselors return to their positions in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. The period between the death of the President of the Church and the reorganization of the First Presidency (usually after the prophet’s funeral) is called the Apostolic Interregnum.
President Dallin H. Oaks, who presided over general conference as president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, said it was the first time in nearly 75 years that a president of the Church died just days before general conference.
He was announced as the new President of the Church on October 14, 2025, and was also named a counselor in the First Presidency. President Henry B. Eyring was appointed first counselor and President D. Todd Christofferson was appointed second counselor.
During the conference, 12 musicians from 10 countries joined Temple Square’s Tabernacle Choir as global members. During the leadership meeting on Thursday, October 2, 2025, two new Area Seventy members were announced and submitted for a retention vote.
