As someone who suffers from Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), I am used to falling into cycles of overthinking anxiety. I tend to overthink everything. “Do my friends really like me?” “Is my writing okay?” “Am I wasting my life?” All these questions hit my head every day and I end up overthinking.
You may also find yourself stuck in an anxious cycle of overthinking and desperately looking for a way out. The good news is that we don’t have to stay in this insecure prison forever. Jesus can help you break out of this cycle and give you lasting peace.
Whenever you find yourself in a frenzy of anxious thoughts, turn to God in prayer. Ponder what the Lord is saying in the Bible and keep His promises in mind. Although you may feel alone and without help at times, it is important to remember that God is always with you. God is with you in good times and in difficult times. Other people in our lives may leave, but God will never leave (Hebrews 13:5-6).
Here are five Bible verses to help you when you’re stuck in an anxious cycle of overthinking. When you feel anxious, remember these verses and let the comfort of God’s Word give you peace.
1. 1 Peter 5:7
“Cast all your cares on God, for he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
The Apostle Peter tells us to cast our worries on Jesus because He cares for us. These are words with weight that we don’t need to ignore. Whatever is causing us anxiety, we need to surrender it to the Lord. If you can calm your anxious thoughts, you can stop the cycle of overthinking. By addressing the root of the problem, you can prevent yourself from falling into a spiral.
Think about what causes you to overthink. Is it anxiety about people or specific situations? Try to figure out what’s causing your anxiety or overthinking. Once you understand this, you will be able to communicate these specific concerns to the Lord. Prayers can be vague, but the more specific the better. If they were specific, we would see more clearly how the Lord answered them.
Instead of continuing the cycle of overthinking and worrying, surrender these concerns to the Lord. As humans, we tend to want to control every situation, but this is irrational. We must choose to trust God, surrender our fears to Him, and rest in His peace. God’s thoughts and ways are higher than ours, and faith in God can alleviate any problem (Isaiah 55:8-9).
2. Philippians 4:6-7
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).
Paul speaks many beautiful truths in Philippians 4:6-7. By following his teachings, we can break out of the anxious cycle of overthinking. Prayer helps us know that God hears our concerns, worries, and troubles. Every request submitted to God with thanksgiving will be blessed with a peace that passes all understanding. This peace is God-given and can never be lost.
This passage made a big difference for me. When anxiety begins to rise in my heart, I think of Philippians 4:6-7. With gratitude, I submit my requests before God and go to Him in prayer. I pour out my heart to God and tell Him everything that’s on my mind. His peace washes over me and protects my heart.
If you choose to surrender your problems to the Lord, you will no longer feel so anxious. The best thing you can do when you are feeling anxious is to go to God in prayer. Instead of getting stuck in a cycle of overthinking, you can stop anxious thoughts by praying to Christ. God has a way of erasing all fear and anxiety from our hearts. Trust God with your concerns today and allow Him to bring peace to your heart, mind, body, and soul.
3. 2 Timothy 1:7
“For the Spirit that God has given us does not make us timid, but gives us power and love and self-control” (2 Timothy 1:7).
Another Bible verse that can help you when you’re overthinking and feeling anxious is 2 Timothy 1:7. This passage shows us that the Spirit God has given us can make us timid and fearful. In return, the Spirit gives us power, love, and self-control. With this truth in mind, we need to remember that the Holy Spirit lives within us. From the moment we put our faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit lives within us forever and never leaves. Because God lives within us, we need to remember that we are never alone in our anxious thoughts and that God can give us peace.
The Holy Spirit is not afraid of anything. When we look at anxiety, we see that it is usually rooted in fear. But when we turn to the Holy Spirit, we find that He gives us power, love, and self-control. Fear has no place in the nature of the Spirit. That’s why we need to trust in the Lord and rely on His strength. God gives us courage, courage, and perseverance to face any situation.
It takes time, but the Holy Spirit helps us accept the love, power, and self-control He has given us. We can only fully understand these beautiful gifts by trusting God and surrendering control to Him. Once we surrender to God, we will see power manifest as strength in our lives, love helping us love like Jesus, and self-discipline helping us turn away from sinful flesh.
4. John 16:33
“These things I have said to you, that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
We will continue to face hardships while we live on this earth, but Jesus has overcome this world. There is no room for anxiety, fear, or overthinking because this is true. Anxiety can creep into our minds and make us overthink, but we have to stop it in its tracks.
Anxiety is not our God, Jesus is. We must choose every day to believe what Jesus says, not what our anxiety and overthinking are trying to tell us. Anxiety and overthinking are liars and you don’t need to give them time. Focusing on God’s Word is more beneficial to our overall well-being.
Additionally, relying on Biblical truth instead of your own thoughts can help you break the anxious cycle of overthinking. Every time you are tempted to overthink, stop yourself and say, “Jesus overcame the world.” Take a deep breath and choose to face that day knowing that the Lord is in control from heaven.
5. 1 Corinthians 2:16
“For, “Who knew the will of the Lord and instructed him?” But we have the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16).
Since we have the mind of Christ, there is no reason to stay in the anxious cycle of overthinking. Having the mind of Christ means we have the peace of Christ. We need to be at peace and still because Jesus never worries or overthinks. Things can get hectic, but there’s no need to overthink things.
If we think too much, we will doubt the Lord. Jesus has been good to us and blessed us in many ways. Therefore, there is no reason to doubt God. To doubt God is to fall into the lies and worries in our heads.
Choose to cultivate what God has already given you: the heart of Christ. Sharpen your mind by learning Bible truth, reflecting on it, and applying it to your life. There is no use in studying the Bible if you cannot apply its teachings to your life. Actively incorporating the teachings of the Bible will ensure that peace reigns in our hearts.
When we begin to think of Jesus instead of our own worries, our worries pale in comparison to Him. Choose to begin cultivating the heart of Christ in your life today. God will give you peace and comfort from anxious thoughts. Over time, your quality of life will truly improve as you learn to control anxious thoughts and overthinking. Instead of living in a prison of fear, you will walk in the freedom of the Lord.
