Prayer to get back the time when every day feels the same
Written by Sophia Bricker

Bible reading:
“Be careful, then, how you live your life. Live wisely, not foolishly, and make the most of every opportunity, for times are evil.” – Ephesians 5:15-16, NIV

Listen or read below:

The popular saying “Variety is the spice of life” is often true. We find that when we combine our daily lives with different events, even if it’s just a new recipe, our interest and energy are renewed. But sometimes diversity isn’t an option. Work must be done and completed according to a set schedule with established practices and times. Similarly, students understand that school requires familiarization with a regular rotation of buses and carpools, classes, textbooks, and homework. Routines are often essential to maintaining productivity and a sustainable livelihood.

Most of us realize that even though we enjoy variety, we need consistency in life. But it becomes difficult to do so when the days start to feel monotonous. We start to think that we do the same things, live in the same rhythm, and that every day looks the same. It can sometimes feel like we’re stuck in an endless loop, just like the movie Groundhog Day depicts. This even affects our spiritual lives, making us realize that our faith is stagnant due to our daily ruts. Prayer and Bible reading are just part of our repetitive schedule. At this point, we may be tempted to consider mundane moments unimportant.

But that moment is the most important. In the midst of our daily chores of work, family, school, and household chores, do we love others? Do we seek God’s hand in our lives by pausing to recognize and thank God for the new mercies he offers each morning? Will we continue to trust in the goodness of the Lord even when we are overwhelmed by the ongoing cycle of predestination?

The Bible teaches that we are meant to make the most of every moment by redeeming the time entrusted to us. Every day may feel the same, but it’s important to stay true to your daily work. Every second of our lives matters. The Bible teaches that we should count our days. This means thinking about how you live now and recognizing that it will impact eternity (Psalm 90:12). The Lord gives each of us time and what we do with it matters.

If we are wise, we will carefully consider our daily steps as disciples on this pilgrimage called life. Like the faithful servants in Jesus’ parable of the talents, we use what our master has given us and multiply it through obedience (Matthew 25:14-30). Wasting our days or considering them insignificant does not bring us the praise of Christ.

Some of your current schedule may need to be removed to make room for other priorities. You can also add other plans and events to add excitement. But as much as we are grateful for the added spice in our lives, our focus should be on the Lord. Careful consideration of our days involves using every resource for the glory of God.

Let’s pray:

God of every moment, teach me to count my days with wisdom.

Help us to remember that it is important how we live in the moment, regardless of monotony or excitement, and help us to consider our steps from an eternal perspective. How you deal with boredom due to repetitive schedules is important. Lord, look to the daily beauty and love you provide in my plans and problems. When every day feels the same, I want to stop and be grateful for how these gifts give me hope.

Holy Spirit, work through me. Please help me make the most of the time I have been given and live a fruitful life. And don’t waste the opportunities I get every day in my busy life. Then I can love others, serve with kindness, and speak with grace as needed. Because you are a good and loving Lord who has generously given me new life and freedom from sin.

I would like to honor you with the way I spend my time. Amen.
