prayer to bless the lord
Author: Amanda Idleman

Bible reading:
As long as I live, I will bless you and lift up my hands to you in prayer. – Psalm 63:4

Listen or read below:

How can we bless the Lord?

Throughout the Bible, we read about people who want to bless the Lord. In Psalm 63, David declares that he will bless the Lord as long as he lives. This seems like a bold statement, considering how difficult it is to discern whether we are fully following God’s will in our lives. David’s writings give us insight into what a life lived in worship of the Lord looks like.

David begins by explaining that in prayer we open our hearts to the Lord with our palms up and bless Him. This means that without God he has nothing at all. His ability to accomplish for himself as a leader, as a human being, and even as a king is meaningless without God. He then offers all his needs to the Lord in prayer.

What’s interesting is that stopping and asking for help is one of the ways we can bless the Lord. This reveals how relational God is. All God wants is for us to stop and tell Him how our day was. To share our questions with God. To show God our needs. To share our inadequacies with God. By doing so, we can bless the Lord.

Then, in verses 5-8, David declares that he will remember God. He will think of him. He will cling to him. He will sing praises to Him. God wants us to praise Him. Our Father is pleased with our worship. God invites us to consider His powerful and creative ways. To plan our lives in awe of God’s creation.

Honestly, it is God’s joy and our joy to know God and make Him known. Every new coincidence that surprises us is an opportunity to bless the Lord. When we create, we bring glory to the Creator, as He does. The key is to give God credit instead of letting our pride keep us from seeing His goodness and glory.

At the end of chapter 63, David declares his great trust in the Lord. In verses 9 through 11, he boasts that those who try to kill him will be destroyed and God will be glorified in the end. If we want to bless the Lord, we must trust in Him with all our hearts and not rely on our own understanding. We must obey the Lord (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Apparently God wants us. David is described as a man faithful to God’s own heart. He was not a perfect man, but he pursued the Lord relentlessly. What God wants for us is for our hearts, minds, and souls to earnestly seek the Lord.

Let’s pray:

God,

We want to bless you as long as we live. We hope that our lives will be filled with your pleasant scent. May we end this life and hear You say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” We come to you with open arms. We raise our palms, open our hearts to you and declare that without you we are nothing. we need you We cast our cares upon You, confess our sins, and ask Your grace to wash us away.

As we go through each day, we remember you. We invite you to our daily life. We take time to consider Your provision, Your good gifts, and stand in awe of Your amazing grace. As we lie in bed, we think of you. We will keep your promise. We banish lies that try to confuse our thinking, but instead we consider your goodness and mercy. Our hearts rejoice in you!

Let’s live with deep trust in you. May we acknowledge you in every way. When you feel fear, remember your faithfulness. Let’s remember that you showed up for us! What you provided for us over and over again. We rely on You and strive to be obedient to Your mission.

we love you. May everything we do be a blessing to you! Amen.
