Shafiki Wasike was killed in his faith in Mbale City, Uganda on September 1, 2025. Morning Star News

The Ugandan Muslim high school student died this month after he converted to Christianity, sources said.

Akram Kairoki, a junior at Mbar High School in Mbaru city, used his brother Shafiki Wasike as a knife twice just before he arrived at school on September 1st, sources said. Wasike was 19.

“Why should I stab me – I did nothing wrong with him. It would just change my faith and join the Christian faith,” the bleeding said before succumbing to his injuries, according to classmate Jonathan Cabaleare.

Wasaiche, in Bujoroto village, Nkoma district of Mbale, placed his faith in Christ after attending an August 31 field mission event that included discussions on Christianity and Islam, said Pastor David Wobomba of the Ministry of Evangelism.

Pastor Wobomba was discussing the Muslims identified as Sheikh Abdallah at the event. Kailoki learned about the conversion of his brother from his Muslim neighbors who attended the discussion, the pastor said.

“I led Wasike in the middle of salvation for a few hours and invited him to the church the following Sunday,” Pastor Wabomba told Morning Star News. “Before we said goodbye, Wasike was very happy. Three hours later, Wasike called me over the phone and said he was sending a threatening message to him about his brother being an embarrassment towards his family and his loyal Muslims.

When Wasiki returned home that night, his brothers angered to him, telling him that in their home they would not accept the practice of two religions and that he should immediately understand that he should condemn Christianity, Pastor Wobomba learned from him.

On the way to school on September 1, Wasike and his brother Kairoki removed the knife from his bag, stabbed a wasp in the chest, and stabbed him again near the rib on the left, the pastor said. Wasike’s screams brought together three students who found him screaming and asking for help, classmate Kabaale said.

Three students, Kabare, Ronald Muhuwana and John Michael Musamari, immediately called for the transport of a motorcycle that rushed him to the hospital.

Wasike succumbed to injuries at the Mbale Regional referral hospital.

Kairoki was in hiding, but Mbale police conducted a central search and within days he arrested him. He was charged with murder, the pastor said.

“Our team was tracking him in several areas of Busoga and Buganda, but eventually took him to Nakwigarosel, the Busoruwe Town Council in Butareja district.” “He is currently in our custody at the Mbale City Police Station and will soon be paraded in front of the court.”

Taitika thanked the community for providing information that led to Kiaroki’s arrest.

“As police, we want to remind the public that anyone in 15+ years will parade in court to answer for criminal charges,” he said.

Waske was placed to rest at the home of the family ancestors of Kabuwagashi Town Council. Pastor Wobomba held his funeral on September 8th. He told Morning Star News that his family and family members refused to touch them.

The murder was the latest in many examples of persecution of Christians in Ugandan that Star News documented that morning.

The Uganda constitution and other laws provide for religious freedom, including the right to spread faith and to transform from one faith to another. Muslims make up less than 12% of Uganda’s population, and the eastern part of the country has high concentration.
