Prayer to find satisfaction in our work
By Lynette Kittle

Bible Reading:
“The Lord God took him and put him in the garden of Eden, and he made him work and care for him.” – Genesis 2:15

Listen or read:

Monday morning blues, many hardworking individuals face it every week and go to work faithfully for their families. It’s a joy for some, but for many, it’s a chore and a way to the financial means they need to get in life. Whether we enjoy working or not, God is the one who created it at the beginning of the earth. Work was established before the fall of man, so working without the influence of a sinful fallen world really doesn’t know what it feels like. Despite the effects of sin, there is still a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment that comes through it, and everything he sets for us is beneficial to us in multiple ways. Ecclesiastes 5:12 also reminds us that workers’ sleep is poor.

For those who hate their job
Still, we may wonder about jobs that are not attractive and chores that we fear and hate, and that the work seems mediocre and unimportant, and what is great about work. Some jobs seem to feel less than satisfaction, so in these circumstances, how do we find jobs that God aims to give in our lives? Below are six ways to find satisfaction with our work.

1. Resisting to complain about our work. Instead of carrying around a bad attitude about our work, Philippians 2:14 states, “Do everything without complaining or arguing.”

2. For approval, look to God, not to bosses or colleagues. Supervisors, fellow employees, are all working through their own issues, so there is often little encouragement and praise in the workplace. So, rather than looking at people to encourage us, Colossians 3:23 urges us, “Whatever you do, I will work with all my heart so that we will work for the Lord, not for the master of man.”

3. Think of your job as serving God, not people. Countless individuals fearing to go to work every day, working only for their pay, enjoying it, looking forward to it, and finding real satisfaction, joy, or achievement in doing it. But God wants us to work like we work for him, not for men. As Ephesians 6:7 urges, “Serve with all your heart, as if you are serving the Lord, not the people.”

4. Work to bring praise to God, not to ourselves. It’s easy to lose sight of why God placed us on earth. He has laid us here to praise us and bring him glory. So, “If someone speaks, they should do so as people who speak God’s Word. If someone serves, they should do so with the power that God offers.

5. Work as faithfulness to God. 1 Samuel 12:24 states, “But let the Lord fear him and serve him faithfully with all his might, think of what he has done for you,” Corinthians 10:31 states, “Eat and drink, and do everything, do it, do it all for the glory of God.”

6. Trying to please God, not men and women. When the apostle Paul was seduced to please people on God, he explains in Galatians 1:10.

Let’s pray:

Dear Father,
Help us to thank you for the opportunity to work. Open our eyes and make sure you created it first, and aims to benefit us only through work, even the most seemingly insignificant work. Let us set our minds to serve you in our work. Focus us on seeking approval rather than trying to gain praise and rewards from men and women. We protect our hearts and inflate with pride in our achievements. Enhance us so that we become loyal workers. Then we will please you and bring honor to your name. 2 Timothy 2:15 says, “We will do our best to present ourselves to God as an approved person, as a worker who is not ashamed, and we will properly treat the true word.”
In the name of Jesus, Amen.
