According to NBC News, the first known human case of someone with a screw worm has been found in the United States. It is believed that the cause of this carnivorous parasite, detected in humans, is due to a person’s trip to El Salvador.

“The risk to US public health from this referral is very low,” said Andrew G. Nixon, a spokesman for Health and Human Services. Previously, Reuters reported that Marylanders had acquired parasites while visiting Guatemala.
Screwworms, the larvae of screwworm flys, are also known for destroying herds of cattle, especially in Central America and Mexico, and can kill both wildlife and domestic pets. To prevent the spread of screw worms, US Secretary of Agriculture Brook L. Rollins visited Texas at the beginning of the month to discuss how to combat the invasion of screwworms and the invasion of the United States. For now, the plan involves breeding sterile flies, releasing them in the air towards the Texas-Mexican border, where infected flies mate with sterile ones and stop the spread of the disease as the flies disappear.

With US beef prices continuing to rise over the past year, the last thing the US needs is infected cows. ABC News reported that ground beef increased by 11.5% and steak increased by 12%, with drought being one of the reasons for the price rise. The USDA also cited the screw worm outbreak as one of the reasons the US government is suspending beef imports from Mexico.
Observing events like the emergence of meat-eating screw worms in the United States, it is worth considering them through the lens of biblical prophecy. The Bible warns that on the last day, plagues and diseases will increase, affecting both humans and animals. Look at what we have already seen, as deer, squirrel, rabbit and pig are affected by strange conditions. Even the plague has been reported in California. While many focus on signs of dramatic endings like the mark of the beast, the Bible also speaks of more subtle ways in which life becomes confused. Illness and hunger occur in unprecedented ways.

The spread of parasites like screw worms reminds us that these warnings are not only mental but practical.
