Since he first announced his presidential run in 2016, Donald Trump has become one of the most iconic and controversial public figures of the era. But more people have an opinion on what he is like than what people who really know him said. But what if there was a way to get a glimpse of who he really is from those who know him best?
Film director Matt Sayer is dedicated to sharing stories from people who know him best. Instead of sharing propaganda and terrifying tactics about Trump’s personality, Sayer edited an eloquent documentary called “The Trump I Know.” It features interviews from his family and people who worked closely with the former president. But both the pandemic and cancellation cultures have prevented the film from gaining the kind of traction it might have had.
“My Twitter account at the time couldn’t actually get it back. It’s evaporated. Facebook can’t sell T-shirts, hoodies and other items just by using the logo,” says Thayer. “It was just saying ‘Trump I know’ and they accused us of selling alcohol and live animals. ”

The documentary’s story comes from prominent figures like Trump’s stepdaughter Lara. I personally didn’t interact with Trump’s family much, but I did it from a spiritual perspective, studying homework in his presidency. I share it in my book, God and Donald Trump. I interviewed Donald Trump in 2016 before the election. I realized he was winning, sincere and respectful. I included interviews in my book and the August 2016 Strang Report podcast.
I also saw an earlier version of “Trump I Know.” It was well done and was true to what I had experienced. I highly recommend watching it.
Another powerful element behind the production is the spiritual power that guides people behind the scenes, not just the cancellation of the Trump story and the film itself.
“Our entire team worked with Christians,” says Sayer. “We often pray in tongues because we were in a situation where we didn’t know who the next interview would be. We would receive communion most nights and just put it before the Lord.”
Now, after these obstacles and some mental wisdom, Sayer is ready to re-release the film in a unique format that allows viewers to experience the film in an interactive way. The virtual event, scheduled for October 26th, 2023, is your chance to interact with creators and participate in live Q&A sessions. It is part of the collective pushback to censorship, an opportunity for viewers to help filmmakers feel free to share stories without interference. If spirit-filled Christians are engaged in this kind of content, we believe we have an opportunity to expose the darkness surrounding political culture.
