President Donald Trump’s January 23 executive order announced that more and more healthcare providers will suspend such practices after stripping hospitals of federal funds if they implement gender-transforming procedures to minors. The directive also applies to institutions receiving research and education grants, defining “chemical and surgical amputation of children” as the use of adolescent blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgical use of healthy body parts and genitals.

As reported by Christian Post, the US Department of Health and Human Services issued a warning earlier this year about “risks of serious harm, including infertility/infertility, sexual dysfunction, bone density development disorders, cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, mental disorders, mental disorders, surgical disorders, and regret.”

Even before the new rules were fully implemented, hospitals and insurance companies across the country began to take steps to comply.

Below are hospitals and health insurance companies that have suspended some or all types of sex change procedures for minors.

University of Pennsylvania
Daily Pennsylvania reported on May 29 that the Philadelphia-based university’s medical school would no longer be performing these steps. Dr. Patrick Brennan, Chief Medical Officer at Pen Medicine, called it a “difficult decision to know that it will affect patients and families who trust their care team.” Children’s Hospital (Washington, DC)
In a statement posted online, the hospital announced that it would “stop prescriptions for gender-affirming medications in light of growing legal and regulatory risks to our children’s citizens, our providers and the families we serve.” The change will officially take effect on August 30th after the previous suspension was announced in January. Kaiser Permanente
A Kaiser Permanente spokesperson told KTXL that it came into effect on August 29th, with the provider “suspended sexual change surgeries for identified youth under the age of 19.” However, insurance companies continue to prescribe adolescent blockers and hormones. “We recognize that this is a very challenging and stressful time for patients and that we work closely with each patient to support the care journey,” the spokesman added. University of Chicago Medicine
In a July 18 statement, the hospital explained that it would be suspending prescriptions for adolescent blockers, cross-sex hormones, and minors for surgery due to “new federal actions that put their ability to care for all Medicare or Medicaid patients.” As Illinois’ largest Medicaid provider, the facility said the move is “necessary to enable Uchicago medicine to continue serving our wider community and to provide our mission.” Richmond Children’s Hospital (Comonwealth University, Virginia)
On July 29, the hospital announced that it would “stop providing gender-affirming care” to young people under the age of 19 after a “thoughtful and thorough assessment that does not reveal other viable options.” This change will take effect at the end of October. “As we scale back these services over the next 90 days, our care team will provide and support in safe care for existing patients, taking into consideration the needs of each young person with compassion and clinical judgment,” the hospital said.

The wave of policy change highlights the drastic impact of Trump’s executive order on the health sector and the ongoing national debate regarding the treatment of minors with gender discomfort. While proponents of the Order see it as necessary protection for children from irreversible harm, critics argue it limits access to care.

With more hospitals expected to follow, the future of such procedures in the US remains uncertain as legal, medical and spiritual battles continue to unfold.
