According to the latest research report entitled “Changing Churches” published by the British Evangelical Union, the church is committed to following Jesus Christ compared to five years ago.

The findings strengthened the related research that was recently revealed in the Bible Society’s “Quiet Revival” report.

Danny Webster, director of advocacy for the British Evangelical Alliance, commented in the news update that “more people are approaching the church and exploring the Christian faith — in this area, small churches are seeing salvation at a rate comparable to larger churches.”

The study has sought the views of 300 church leaders and around 1,000 church members across the country, since about five years after the Covid-19 pandemic challenged preconceived notions about how they interact with church life.

“The past five years have had a major impact on the Evangelical Churches in the UK,” Gavin Culver, CEO of the Evangelical Alliance, said of the study.

“What I see when I travel around the country is a church that is well adapted to the landscape, serving their community wholeheartedly, and growing numerically, as they confidently share Jesus’ hopes with those around them.

“Among youth reflected in our new and changing church report, we are open to the Christian faith. The coming years may be even more dramatic in this age of spiritual openness.”

Data shows an average church attendance has increased by 13% since January 2020, which is still considered by Webster “underestimating what’s going on throughout the UK.”

The larger church grew at the same time as the smaller churches reduced, he said. “We see a huge growth in which all churches surveyed have overall attendance changes of 22% and large churches are contributing disproportionately to that number.”

Churches with fewer than 47 members fell by 15%, while a quarter of churches with more than 165 members increased by 21%.

The Evangelical Alliance had anticipated a decrease in weekly church attendance. This is a trend confirmed by data showing a decline from 90% in 2020 to 78% in 2025. However, most respondents who no longer attend each week attend church gatherings about three times a month.

“The changes in the lives of the churches we are witnessing are not evenly distributed. Beyond the results of this study, it is necessary to understand how different denominations operate, and how churches in different parts of the country are growing or declining,” writes Webster.

“The obvious thing is that in the UK people are becoming aware of Jesus because his good news is shared with confidence. It is an encouragement for us to follow him and help others get to know him.”
