This week’s “Come, Follow Me” study guide covers Doctrines and Contracts 102-105, including revelations about Zion’s camp expedition.
Below are some quotes from past and present leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints about these sections of the Doctrine and Covenant.
Doctrine and Contract 102
“The (stake president) is very responsible for seeing the doctrine taught in stocks being pure and innocent. There are no false or false practices taught. They summon the criminal to appear before the Disciplinary Council, where measures are taken to allocate a probationary period or to destroy him or her from the church.
“This is the most troublesome and unwelcome job, but the President must face it without fear or favor. All this is done in harmony with the direction of the spirit and is described in section 102 of Doctrine and Contract.”
– The late President Gordon B. Hinckley, then the president of the church, “Stake President” General Conference in April 2000
“Back to Kirtland, Ohio, after his mission, in February 1834, Martin Harris was chosen by revelation to serve the first high council of the Church (see Doctrine and Covenant 102:3). Less than three months later, he left Keatland with a man from the camp of Zion.
– President Darrin H. Oaks, then a quorum member of the 12 Apostles, General Conference in April 1999, “Witness: Martin Harris”
“More related to this principle,” it is his privilege that he (the president) presides over the council of the church in accordance with the dignity of his office and be supported by two other presidents appointed in the same way that he himself was appointed.
“‘And in the absence of either or both of the people appointed to support him, he has the power to preside over the council without an assistant, and in the absence of himself, the other president has the power to preside over him, or either of them (Doctrine and Contract 102:10-11).
“We who serve as counselors recognize and know the parameters of our authority and our responsibility. Our only desire is to support and support our leaders at the incredible burden of his office. The church is growing so much. … It is moving around the world. Its programs are broad and complex, and the responsibilities are diverse and varied.
“But no matter the situation, I can say that work will move forward in an orderly and in a wonderful way.”
– The late President Gordon B. Hinckley, the first counselor of the first presidency at the time, General Conference in October 1992 “Church is on course”
Doctrine and Contract 103
“This is your day, and your work has begun. Now is the time to be worthy of the temple’s recommendations. When you do this work, you will become a savior on Mount Zion (see Obadiah 1:21; Doctrine and Covenant 103:9).”
– Sister Elaine S. Dalton, the Young Female General President, General President of April 2012, said, “Now is the time to stand up and shine!”
“The Prophet Joseph Smith received these instructions from the Lord.
“‘Because they were set to shine in the world and be saviors for men.
“And as they are not men’s saviors, so they have lost their taste” (D&C 103:9-10).
I was impressed by the depth of the meaning associated with the word “savior of man” when it is being studied in the perfect definition and relationship of the priesthood.
“The Priesthood is the power of God, it is used to save the soul. It is not shared with young or older men simply to sit on or hold names, but with the expectation that the recipient will exercise it on behalf of themselves and others.
– The late Elder Carlos E. Asai, then the Directorate, 70 years old, General Assembly in April 1980, “The Salt of the Earth: The Taste of the Saviors of Men and Men.”
“This is not an opportunity to review the history of saints in Jackson County, Missouri. It is not sufficient to say that I did not demonstrate the dedication and commitment necessary to establish Zion to establish Zion at that time. So, with my name hurting and sad punishment, those who tasted my name a little, did not listen to the lessons and commandments I gave them in full” (103:4).
“‘They will… start to beat my enemies from this time.
“And by listening to hear all the words that I, the Lord God, speaks to them, they will never cease to prevail until the kingdom of the world is subdued under my feet, and the earth is given to the saints to own it forever” (D&C 103:6-7).
“That is our great promise. We will not stop winning until the Lord establishes His Zion in this world. The true disciples of God’s priesthood will determine how quickly we move towards that great completion by living the gospel and fighting the drainage and evil that is happening in this world.”
– The late President Marion G. Romney, then the second counselor of the first presidency, General Conference of Christ, October 1978
“The Lord has made it clear in our time that we are children of Israel and the seeds of Abraham (see Doctrine and Covenant 103:17), and by his descent and submission of all the ordinances of the Gospel, we are left to the blessings of our Father – Abraham, Isaac, Jacob.
“We must be strong as legitimate bearers of the priesthood. We must be strong in righteous life, in realizing our great salvation mission for the whole world.”
-The late Elder William H. Bennett was then an assistant to the 12 councils at the October 1975 General Conference, “Covenant and Blessings.”
Doctrine and Contract 104

“The Creator entrusted the resources of the earth and all forms of life to our care, but he holds full ownership: “I, the Lord, have extended heaven, have built the earth, and all that is mine” (D&C 104:14).
“As children of God, we were accused of becoming stewards, caretakers and guardians of His creations. The Lord said, “All men are stewards of the earthly blessings that I have made and prepared with my creatures” (D&C 104:13).
“Our heavenly Father allows us to use earthly resources according to our own free will. However, our institutions should not be interpreted as a license to use or consume the wealth of this world without wisdom or restraint.”
– Bishop, Bishop, Bishop Gerrard Casse, “Our Earthly Stewardship”
“Even the universally accepted desire to help the poor, the Lord agrees with our goals, but “must do it in my own way” (D&C 104:16). Otherwise we might actually hurt them. Learn the evil of dolls.
– Elder Stanley G. Ellis, 70 years old at the time, General Meeting of the Lord’s Way, April 2013
“Faith, spirituality, obedience creates prepared and independent people. We are protected from desires and the power of destroyers, just as we follow a ti-minute covenant. And while our families are not always easy for at least a year, let’s do our best.
– In October 2005, Bishop Keith B. McMullin, the second counselor to the bishop’s chairman, said, “Please prepare… strong from now on.”
Doctrine and Contract 105
“In the reasons the Lord gave as to why the early saints of Missouri could not establish the Zion site, they “were not united in accordance with the union necessary for the laws of the heavenly Kingdom” (D&C 105:4). …
“Unity with our brothers and sisters in the body of Christ grows as we listen to our close connection to the First Commandment, in order to love others as ourselves.
– General Conference in April 2023, “One of Christ,” 12 Apostles Quorum Elder D. Todd Christofferson
“In modern revelation, the Lord calls the temple the house made in my name (D&C 105:33).
“The process of passing on to ourselves the name of Jesus Christ, which began in the sea of baptism, continues and expands to the house of the Lord. When we stand in the sea of baptism, we join the temple. When we join the temple, we remember the Savior. Therefore, the Lord Jesus Christ.
– General Conference in April 2009, Elder David A. Bednar of the quorum of 12 Apostles, “Standing with Honorable Names”
