Have you ever felt like you’re sneaking up on a TV show? Over the past few years my husband and I have not been able to escape from the hit show I was chosen. We had never seen one episode. “Ah, you I got it To see I was chosen! “They declared on every holiday and event.
We were always politely declining, smiling and smiling, and we had heard them continue to do just how great it was, but there was a reason not to jump on the world bandwagon.
Until we didn’t.
Let me explain. TV shows have barely caused buzz I was chosen. Not only is it a creator, but also a director, co-writer and executive producer, Dallas Jenkins created a huge hit that wiped out the glove for the past decade. The first season aired in 2017, with season 5 released this spring. There are currently seven more seasons.
For those who are unfamiliar (honestly – how? ha!) I was chosen is a historic TV series that tells and tells the journey of Jesus and his disciples. It begins with Jesus preparing for ministry, calling out his disciples, performing various miracles, preaching, and so on, ending in the garden of Gethsemane. (Next season will feature Crucifixion) While leaning heavily towards Bible descriptions, fictional licenses will be taken to add subplots and side characters for entertainment. However, Jenkins assures the audience that the fictional elements remain faithful to the culture, era and, most importantly, the character of God is shown in the Bible.
As you can see, a crossroads were created immediately here for shows like this. Should Christians see it? Many Christians dare to say I most say, “Yes!”, and tend to make mistakes, “In my experience, at least in my experience). There are many stories of people who were inspired to read the Bible for the first time after watching the show, attending churches, seeing elements of the character of Jesus who helped them grow spiritually, or offering forgiveness to their neighbors they had withheld. Testimonies of salvation, people who grow in faith. The show appears to have produced a lot of good fruits around the world. What’s more, the precisely portrayed revelations of Jewish culture and traditions were very helpful for those who have never studied it.
So why did my husband and I not see such a show first? Well, there was a group of valid points standing on the other side of that crossroads, and those were the first voices we heard. There certainly is an element of attention when filming the Bible. The biggest concern we’ve heard was that it could violate the second commandment.
Exodus 20:4 (ESV) You cannot make an image carved for yourself, or a portrait of something in heaven above, or something that is beneath the Earth, or in the water below the Earth.
Many believe in the means of visual arts, including statues, paintings, sketches, comics, promotional images, and actors who portray Trinity members. For them, it’s very easy.
Many of my dear friends have that view and I respect it. I wasn’t sure if I completely agreed with the show itself, but by being careful there I was able to see the wisdom. Personally, as such a visual creature, I didn’t want the complications of the actor rather than seeing the actor’s face portray Jesus when I went to pray.
Due to all these different concerns, my husband and I decided not to watch the show.
Until one day.
I remember sitting on the sofa in our living room. My husband and I were experiencing tough seasons. We were at the greatest war of our lives and were disappointed and tired of more days than we didn’t. We knew God was moving in our lives, in our marriages, in our homes and in our families, but that was tough. A lot of things have changed dramatically. Much was unknown. Changes have been everywhere. For some reason, I had been thinking about the show for a better half a week and prayed about it. And that day I looked at my husband and said, “I think the Holy Spirit wants me to see I was chosen. ”
To be honest, I was hoping for a little pushback. After all, my theologically, my husband, who had a solid attitude in the show, seemed to know more than I did in these areas. I trusted his discernment for our family…but I also knew what was in my mind. But what do you know? He turned to me and said, “I’ll turn it on.”
We watched that first episode and bastarded like a baby. Next is the second episode. More sobs. Ultimately, he burned five whole seasons in a few months, and every episode was in tears. That show we had been avoiding very carefully brought new enthusiasm for our walks that we desperately needed. It has led us to dig deeper into the Bible. We sometimes paused the show, then made it a “fact check” and realized we were happy every time it was Bible accurate. Due to the visuals and times of Jewish culture, I have a good understanding of various stories. Even details submitted under a fictitious license are often done, I did it It was something that happened in that era, even though we cannot know for certain.
For my husband and I, it showed the elements of Christ’s character and humanity that we needed to experience that way. And the best part is that God has always known. He knew that if we had seen it years ago, he would not have understood it the way we did. It was needed when needed.
You may read it and think, “We should not need anything beyond the Bible.” His words are sufficient, but God should not enter the box either. Who would say he cannot work at his will, does not, or does not work? God himself never changes, but I think that the way he chooses to reach his heart may differ from person to person, and age.
And for us, it went through that incredibly painful season I was chosen.
I can’t speak for everyone. Only the Holy Spirit can do it. But I believe it is at the end of the day, I was chosenlike many other decisions we make as followers, it is a matter of Christian freedom. It is not even wrong to be globally right for all believers. So I ask you this – what does the Holy Spirit say to you?
One important thing to remember is that if your neighbor’s opinion is different from yours, you should respect it. If someone has a firm belief about the show, whether they see or not, they should follow that belief and trust in the promotion of the Holy Spirit within them. At the same time, we should not judge or assume the motivations of our Christian neighbors who have opposing opinions. We are all together on this journey, but these are not matters of life or death worth fighting the brothers of Christ.
I admit, but I understand the passion of my family years ago. Now I’m the one who often declares I got it To see I was chosen! (But if you don’t, you won’t be judged)::Laughing::
