This week’s “Come, Come, Follow Me” research guide covers Doctrine and Contract 84. This includes the teaching that “the power of respectfulness is revealed” through priesthood ordinances (D&C 84:20).
Below are some quotes from past and present church leaders regarding this section of doctrine and covenant.
“The angels around you”
“When I talk about being confident before God, I mention that I am now confident in coming closer to God. I am referring to the heavenly Father hearing us and praying with confidence that he understands our needs better than we do. We reach our highest possible potential.”
– President Russell M. Nelson, General Assembly, April 2025, “Trust before God”
“Brothers and sisters, the Lord will comfort you too. He will strengthen you. He will bless you with peace.
“Listen to you this promise of Jesus Christ: “I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my spirit will be in your heart, and my angels will turn around you to embrace you” (D&C 84:88).
“There is no limit to the Savior’s ability to help you. His inexplicable suffering in Gethsemane and Calvary was for you. His infinite tone sin is for you.”
– President Russell M. Nelson, General Assembly, October 2024, “The Lord Jesus Christ Comes Again”
“We were born at this point for God’s purpose, the gathering of Israel. We are sometimes challenged when we serve as full-time missionaries, but the Lord Himself is our great example and leads us in such circumstances.
– Elder Marcos A. Eidukait, Directorate General 70, April 2022 General Meeting, “Lift Your Heart and Rejoice”
“When it comes to your happiness and salvation, it is always worth the effort to strive. Adjusting your lifestyle and traditions is worth the effort. The Lord recognizes the challenges you face.
“In his own words the Savior said, “I will go before your face, and I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my spirit will be held by your (heart), and around you, my angels will hold you, and embrace you” (D&C 84:88). ”
– Elder Carlos A. Godoy, Directorate Seventy, October 2020 General Meeting, “I believe in angels”
“When the road is difficult, we can rely on the Lord’s promise…” Those who receive you will also go before your face. I’m on your right and on your left.
“I testify that whenever you are doing his errands, you go in front of your face. Sometimes you become the angel that others send to endure others. Sometimes you are surrounded by angels embracing you.
– President Henry B. Eyring, then the first counselor of the first presidency, October 2017 General Assembly, “Fearing not to do good”
“People with faith”
“This is the beauty of the path of covenant, worship, love, and loyalty to God. We enter that path by baptism, and we pledge to take over the name of Christ to us, and to maintain His commandments. We receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
“To further sanctify us, additional priesthood ordinances and covenants have been made in the Lord’s house. Temple ordinances and ordinances constitute an elevated form of worship.
“President Russell M. Nelson emphasized that “every man and every woman who participate in the priesthood ordinance and make and maintain a covenant with God have direct access to God’s power” (The Eternal Covenant (October 2022); Respectfulness is manifested” (in us) (Doctrine and Covenant 84:19-21).”
– General Conference, April 2025, “Worship”, 12 Apostles Quorum Elder D. Todd Christofferson
“The covenants we make with God, such as those we do in the baptism ordinance, give us access to His power (see Doctrine and Covenants 84:19-21). God’s power is a real power that helps us to develop our ability to face challenges, make good decisions, and tolerate difficult situations.
– Sister Andrea Munoz Spannaus, second counselor to the general president in April 2024, “A faithful end”
“Repentance leads to the keeping and maintaining the covenant through sacred rituals. The first ordinance of salvation and elevation is immersive baptism for the remission of sin. Baptism can receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and enter into a covenant with the Lord.
“Brothers and sisters, I encourage you to bring this miracle into your life. I choose to come to Jesus Christ and exercise my faith in Him, and I will make and maintain the covenant that is in the ordinance of repentance, salvation and exaltation.
– Elder Carlos G. Leviro Jr., Directorate General 70, October 2021 General Assembly, “The Miracle of the Gospel of Jesus Christ”
“Jesus said, “Enter the gate of the strait, the strait is the gate, and the narrow one leads to life, and there are a few things to find” (3 Nephi 27:33). Figuratively, this gate is very narrow, and it becomes narrow enough to allow it to enter in time. Ordinances and contracts, “the power of piety is manifested” (Doctrine and Contracts 84:20 in our lives). ”
– Elder Todd Christofferson of 12 Apostles Quorum, “Why the Road of the Covenant” at the April 2021 General Conference
“We have made the restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, once again the organization of the Lord’s living church on Earth, and the priesthood blessings that have since been made available to the whole of the earth. The sacred ordinances and covenants that restrain us in God and set us in the path of covenant will become holy stars, as they are clearly collaborating with the “power of God’s power.” We gather Israel on both sides of the veil and prepare the earth for the second coming of our Savior. ”
– Elder Alan R. Walker, Directorate 70, April 2021 General Assembly, “The Gospel Light of Truth and Love”
“We do not come to the temple to hide or escape from the evils of the world. Rather, we do come to the temple to conquer the evil world. By being blessed with being blessed by inviting “the power of God” into our lives, receiving priesthood ordinances, keeping sacred covenants, and promoting sacred covenants, we are invited into our lives by building priesthood ordinances and maintaining our efforts. ”
– General Conference in April 2020, Elder David A. Bednar, quorum of 12 Apostles, “Let’s build this house in my name.”
“Through his tone sin, Jesus Christ reded us from the consequences of Adam’s fall, and allowed us to repent and ultimately elevate. Throughout his life he set an example of receiving an ordinance that would save “the power of God is manifested” (Doctrine and Covenant 84:20). ”
– Elder Taniera B. Wacolo, Directorate General 70, April 2018 General Assembly, “Saving the Ordinance brings us a wonderful light”
“Everything my dad has”

“The Heavenly Father wants to develop close personal relationships with each spiritual child. …The relationship God seeks with each spiritual child is so intimate and personal that he can share everything with everything he has.
– Elder Paul B. Peeper, Directorate General 70, April 2024 General Meeting, “Trust in the Lord”
“It was a privilege to meet women of all ages who lived in different circumstances that maintain the covenant. Every day they seek guidance from the Lord and the Prophet, not from the popular media (D&C. 84:38).
– Sister Jean B. Bingham, then General President of the Relief Society, General Conference, April 2022, “The Covenant with God strengthens, protects and prepares us for eternal glory.”
“By all the words that go from the mouth of God”
“If our souls rejoice in the Bible, what are some of the things we do? The desire to be part of the Israeli gathering on both sides of the veil increases. It is normal and natural to invite family and friends to listen to missionaries. Faithfully maintaining the Sabbath, we will attend church every Sunday and decide to remain on the holy path of the covenant with the Saint Cra (see Doctrine and Covenant 84:44).
– Elder Arunluco Valenzuela, Directorate General 70, October 2021 General Assembly, “Deepening the Transition to Jesus Christ”
“Spirit gives light to everyone.”
“We remind you all that we don’t believe that good can only be achieved through the church. We see millions of people supporting and carrying out countless good works, independently of the church. Individually, Latter-day Saints are involved in many of them.
– President Darrin H. Oaks, first counselor to first presidency, October 2021 General Conference, “The Need for the Church”
