Another died Sunday morning from injuries sustained by a shooting at the meeting hall of Jesus Christ Church of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan.
“There was another fatal thing due to gunshots,” Grand Blanctownship Police Chief William Renier said in a video posted on Facebook. “The person died at a local hospital.”
According to the initial reports, one person was killed and nine others were injured.
Seven shooting victims were in stable condition, one in crisis, and Renai said at a brief 3pm press conference where he did not ask questions.
Police say the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford of Burton, Michigan, drove through the front door of a meetinghouse where hundreds of people gathered for service. The suspect left the vehicle and began firing, police said. The fire that swallowed the building was believed to have been intentionally set by the suspect.
The suspect was killed in the parking lot after exchanging a shootout with officers who responded quickly to the scene, Renai said.
“We got a call at 10:25am and 32am,” Renai said. “At 10:25 and 57 seconds there were officers on the scene.”
Another press conference will be held at MDT at 6pm.
Police also believe that “if the scene is safe, we’ll find additional victims.”
“There was a big fire and we believe there were people there near that fire, and they couldn’t leave the church,” Renai said.
