With the declining birth rate, countries around the world are worried about the future, and conversations have reached the White House in the US. President Donald Trump sparked a national debate over how to deal with the so-called baby busts of America.
“One of our biggest concerns is seeing massive cultural extinctions,” says Simone Collins, co-founder of Pronatalist.org, a group that promotes policies to help Americans start and grow their families.

“We don’t really need people to have kids. I think that’s actually a really bad idea,” she said. “We just want our kids in this world, but for now we’re doing something to make it more proactive and difficult to become a parent, even if you want to be.”
CDC data shows that the number of babies born in the US reached a low of 45 in 2023, with only a few states above the alternative level. Experts warn that they can spell out long-term economic and social outcomes.
“One in four young adults is predicted to never become a mom or dad,” said Dr. Brad Wilcox, PhD at the University of Virginia. “And for most of us, nothing more than our lives lacking meaning, purpose, and faith in our lives as much as opportunities to be both spouse and parents, so I think it’s just a tragedy.”
“Since the 1960s, people have had this misguided concern about overpopulation,” added Dr. Melissa Carney of the University of Maryland.
Economists warn that lower birth rates result in fewer workers, lower tax revenues, and fewer populations with fewer elderly people.
“If you’re not investing in friendship or family, you’ll be in a bad place in the final chapter of your life,” Wilcox said.

Notable voices like Elon Musk are also making alarms.
“The birth rates are low in almost every country. Unless that changes, civilizations will disappear,” Musk said.
The White House is currently exploring ways to encourage Americans to have more children. “We support the new baby boom baby bonus. How does that sound?” Trump said cheering at the CPAC.

Among the proposals under consideration are $5,000 payments to new mothers, newborns for married or child-rearing applicants, $1,000 tax-free investment accounts per Fulbright scholarship, and federal funds for fertility awareness education.
“The movement tends to transcend so many different groups,” says Emma Waters of the Heritage Foundation. “It’s taking in your Silicon Valley tech brother, so many religious conservatives, but it’s also tied to the kind of crunch con artist or libertarian who’s really interested in these holistic root-cause approaches to fertility and overall vitality.”
