President Donald Trump recalls the first anniversary of the day he tried to end his life at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and says he is certain it was God who saved him for the “right purpose.”
“It remains my firm belief that only God saved that day for the purpose of justice. To restore our beloved Republic to greatness and save our nation from those seeking its ruin,” the president wrote in a lengthy statement posted on the White House website.

Trump, 79, said that Thomas Crooks, 20, “is within a quarter of an inch of silence our movements to end my life and restore America’s greatness,” but believed that “the hand of Providence and the grace of Almighty God” and that his life was being saved.
“It marks the year since the tragic events of July 13th, 2024,” he writes.
The President continued:
Those who have had scars from that July evening defended the Republic in one of the darkest times in our country. To provide comfort and life-saving care, people were attacked by injured people in confusion and uncertainty. The doctors and first responders rushed to help the injured, the assemblymen led fellow citizens to safety, while the patriots raised their fists into the air, venting support and public pride. These men and women arrived at the gathering as ordinary Americans, but left as heroes. They represent the best of our country and we are forever blessed with their kindness and compassion.
He then came to honor Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief and volunteer firefighter in Buffalo Township, Pennsylvania, who was killed in the rally. The 50-year-old Comperatore died heroically, protecting his wife and daughter from a lost bullet.
“The name (o)ne stands above all for selfless service and the ultimate sacrifice of that fateful day,” writes Trump. “The world will never forget the tragic loss of firefighters, veterans, devoted husbands and fathers Corey Comperatore.”
He said, “When the firefight erupted, Corey did not hesitate to protect his wife and two daughters. He lost his hero and we are forever grateful for his inspiring love, courage and loyalty.”
The White House posts a video of Corey’s wife Helen and their two daughters, Allison and Kayley, reminiscing on the heroes of their husbands and fathers.
A year later, our hearts will remain in the Comperator family. Corey’s courage and love for his family reflects America’s best. President Trump is committed to honouring Corey’s legacy and ensuring justice in his name. pic.twitter.com/nysofofgdv

The anniversary of the failed assassination attempt marked the release of a US Senate report detailing “an disturbing pattern of communication failure and negligence” on the part of the US Secret Service.
The report, released Sunday by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs, found that the Secret Service had rejected numerous requests from Trump’s security details of additional resources. Furthermore, the analysis concluded that there is a breakdown of a set of technical issues and communications.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Kimberly Cheatle, former President Joe Biden’s Secret Service director, “he never told the truth,” who has since resigned.
Shawn Curran, director of the Trump-appointed Secret Service, told Axios that his agency will receive the report and will implement changes to address the issue of Senate analysis.
“Following the events of July 13th, Secret Service has seriously considered our operations and implemented substantial reforms to address the failures that took place that day.”
