About “Music and Speak”
The weekly 30-minute program, which originates from Salt Lake City, contains inspirational music and uplifting words, first aired on July 15, 1929, making it one of the longest-lasting and continuous network broadcasts in history.
The 5,000th episode of “Music & The Chaked Word” will take place on Sunday, July 13th, two days before the 96th anniversary of its first broadcast in 1929.
The weekly performance includes 85 members of the 360-vote volunteer choir and orchestra, as well as choir leaders and staff. These “music missionaries” are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and members of the choir have a months-long audition process.
The origins of the choir date back to 1847, and church pioneers formed a choir singing at church conferences a few weeks after their arrival in Salt Lake Valley, Utah. The orchestra was held in 1999, with up to 85 musicians from a roster of 200 volunteers performing with the choir, performing at weekly “music and spoken words” broadcasts and other special events.
