Cootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris said two firefighters were killed and seriously injured after another firefighter responded to the fire on his pen.
“This was a complete ambush,” Norris said. “These firefighters didn’t have a chance.”
The first report of the fire came on Sunday at 1:21pm. By 2pm, firefighters reported firing fire, triggering a growing response to about 300 law enforcement officials. Some of them traded shots with gunmen.
The standoff ended around 7:40pm. Authorities learned that the gunman was dead. Orders for shelters in the area have been lifted.
Norris, who said he didn’t know what motives were for the attack, said he wasn’t sure if the man shot himself.
“Based on preliminary information, I believe that at the time he was the only shooter on the mountain,” Norris said. “There is no threat to the community at this time.”
Norris said the shooter was tracked by a cell phone signal.
“From 3:16pm (PM) we had a mobile phone activation that was in the same location and in the same area,” he said. “And we polished the phone, and we found out that the man seemed to have died and had died with a weapon nearby.”
Norris said federal authorities provided technology to track signals.

“There are a few helicopters that have very good technology to identify where mobile phone activity is. Yes, our federal partners were helping us in this situation,” he said.
Norris said the snipers are ready if necessary.
“We had two helicopters and we had snipers, so if they had the chance to take a shot, we wanted them to take that shot,” he said.
Sean Turner, former US director of national information and communications, said he was trying to determine why the attack occurred.

Investigators aim to learn “whether there was any kind of tension, some kind of conflict, conflict between local law enforcement and this individual.” Turner said. The authorities then look at the broader political and social views of individuals.
Turner said the ambush was “a rather complicated attack, and the (archer) was meant to hurt more people than he was.”
