The National Education Association (NEA), the nation’s largest teachers’ union, fired after releasing a 2025 handbook that removed references to Jewish victims of the Holocaust. This document refers only to “over 12 million victims” across categories such as “faith, ethnicity, race, political beliefs, gender, gender identification, ability/disability.”
The NEA represents approximately 3 million public school educators. The annual handbook outlines US-wide policy and educational guidance in the section on Holocaust Memory. This document omits Jewish identity entirely and instead promotes a generalized cross-victim narrative. The move has led to increased pressure to distance itself from Jewish organizations within the Union and to promote a pro-Palestinian message.

Earlier this month, the NEA’s leading parliament voted in favor of a resolution boycotting the Prevention Prevention League (ADL) and its Holocaust Educational Materials. Although NEA leadership ultimately refused to adopt a boycott, the removal of Jewish references in its official handbook reflects radical changes in the union.

Critics argue that elimination is a deliberate act of historical revisionism. Jewish advocacy groups and conservative commentators denounced union decisions, undermined accurate Holocaust education and promoted an increase in anti-Semitism. In 2025, ADL reported a record surge in anti-Semitism incidents across American schools and campuses.

In addition to the controversy, the NEA Handbook contains references to the term “Nakba,” which is used by anti-Israel activists to explain that the state of Israel is a catastrophe. The handbook encourages teachers to educate students about this story and further solidify the union’s ideological pivot.
There is growing backlash from educators, parents and community leaders. The Jewish organization has revised its handbook with the NEA to reaffirm the historical record that Jews are key targets of the Holocaust. There are also increasing calls for the state education sector to rethink its partnership with unions.

The NEA has not issued any formal apology or amendments. Meanwhile, concerns about politicized curriculum in public schools continue to increase as more parents demand education that is actually rooted rather than ideological.
