Tensions escalated Wednesday in Redmond, Microsoft, Washington, Washington, as at least 18 people were arrested during a devastating protest led by current and former employees. The group calls itself “apartheid azure,” and accuses the tech giant of Microsoft’s AI of contracting with Israel and supporting the Israeli army.

According to Komo News and Redmond Police, protesters blocked pedestrian access, destroyed the company’s property with red paint, and attempted barricaded areas using items from the local farmers market. The conflict began when demonstrators refused to leave despite warnings from police. Authorities reported that the group would become “aggressive” and that officers would force action.

The protest has caused unease among some Microsoft employees over the company’s contract in Israel. In recent months, multiple employees have been fired due to public disruption during a major corporate event. These latest arrests can result in accusations ranging from trespassing and malicious mischief to resisting arrest and obstruction.

Microsoft responded by reaffirming its commitment to human rights standards. The company said it is considering allegations regarding its use of the Azure Cloud platform in Israel, and repeatedly said it would not tolerate illegal activities that disrupt or damage property while supporting freedom of expression.

This week’s arrest is part of a broader campaign among distant activists targeting major tech companies for business deals with Israel. A similar incident occurred on Google. At Google, members of the “No Technology for Apartheid” coalition held a sit-in in their executive office. In one case, the activist occupied the office of Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian for more than eight hours, then took administrative leave.

Microsoft, like Google, is being scrutinized for its participation in Project Nimbus (a $1.2 billion Israeli government cloud computing initiative). Activists argue that these technologies are being used in military operations. However, critics argue that these protests often ignore the security challenges Israel faces from terrorist organizations like Hamas, and oversimplify complex geopolitical realities.

No injuries were reported during the Redmond incident. The Redmond Police Department continues its investigation and is working with prosecutors to determine the next step for those arrested.
