A prayer to remember God’s protective shield around us

Bible Reading:
He will cover you with his pinion and under his wings you will find a shelter. His loyalty is his shield and buckler. – Poem sal91:4
Listen or read:
In one of my kids’ cute kindergarten boardbooks, today’s poem is summarised like this. God protects me like a shield. When my children were little, we remember chanting these words and raising our arms around us to mean God’s powerful shield. During this same season I was battling anxiety and depression. One night my husband was away for work, and the fear was floating above me like a dark cloud. I sat in the bed and recited this truth to myself. God protects me like a shield.
It’s a simple truth, but something you’ll need to revisit frequently. The world is dark and full of chaos and loss. It’s natural to fear the unknown. Soon we forget that we are not alone in our own situation. Nevertheless, our minds love to imagine the worst outcomes rather than meditate on the good of the Lord. In those moments, darkness can feel greater than light, but all it takes is a willingness to accept one of God’s promises as a fact to guide God’s peace.
If you feel like you did in my dark house in the sky and are desperately stubbornly stuck to hope that is God’s protection for us, you will be invited to remember how elegant and powerful our God is. We are safe in God’s arms. He is a good father and makes the mess have no final say in our lives. He writes stories through us, his beloved children, through faint stories of his heaven.
Plus, he’s kind to us. He goes in with us into a dark room, turns on the lights and sees more clearly. It is the enemy of our souls that we want to believe we are hopelessly vulnerable in this life. But with God as our Father, we always have God’s God on our side!
Romans 8:31 states, “If so, what do you say to these things? If God is for us, who can oppose us?” With God, we have the ultimate protection, which is actively moving ahead before us every day. When our minds are crowded with negative and scary thoughts, we stick to this reality. God is for us. We have everything we need every season by his grace. His love covers our sins. He promises us hope and future. We can trust his name. Don’t forget that you are protected, you are loved, and you are never alone.
Let’s pray:
Dear Lord,
We are very grateful for your promise to protect us like a shield. You go ahead of us and make a path even when it seems there is no way. Remember your faithfulness, and remember that your light is more powerful than darkness.
We ask in Jesus’ name that you will banish the darkness and fear that I would like you to believe that I am alone, vulnerable and that there is no hope in this world. Please allow me to live with confidence, assure me that the best has not come yet. I believe you are good and I believe that you can provide everything you need with each season. You write good stories from my life, and darkness won’t win.
Let me believe that your protection is wide and strong enough to care for those I love. Your hands cover my home, my family, my marriage, my children, and my loved ones. You will never leave or abandon your people.
When evil thoughts of despair and fear come to my mind, help me capture them. Allow meditate on the truth of the Bible, not the suffering of fear and anxiety. Cover my life, my thoughts and my home with your perfect peace.
Thank you for being a great God. If you’re not sure if you can, remember that I’m simply dusty. You will hold our world together. You know my story. Make something beautiful from me. Please don’t let the evil of this world win in my life.
Amen.
