In an impressive new report, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services condemned so-called “gender maintenance care,” saying these practices are “disruptive” and therefore not an acceptable treatment for childhood gender discomfort.
A review entitled “Treatment of Childhood Gender Discomfort: A Review of Evidence and Best Practices” analyzes the impact of treatments such as adolescent blockers, hormones, and gender exchange surgeries.
“Thousands of American children and adolescents are receiving these interventions,” the report reads.

“Society has a special responsibility to protect the well-being of children. Given that the challenges faced by these patients intersect with deeply contested issues of moral and social importance, including social identity, sexual and reproduction, physical integrity, and sexual norms of expression and behavior, medical practices that have emerged recently to address needs have become the focus of important rebuttals.
The report states that these medical interventions in children suffer from “severe harms such as infertility/sterility, sexual dysfunction, bone density development disorders, adverse cognitive effects, cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, mental disorders, surgical complications, and regret.”
It also acknowledges that the report is “not a clinical practice guideline” and does not include legislative or policy recommendations, but it covers “policy makers, clinicians, therapists, healthcare institutions and, importantly, patients and their families.”
The new report comes as a result of the executive order “Protecting children from chemical and surgical amputations” signed by President Donald Trump in late January.
The order reiterates the strong position of the administration protecting what it considers to be the most vulnerable in the country.
“Across the nation today, health professionals are hurting and sterilizing more and more impressive children under radical and false claims that adults can change the sex of children through a series of irreversible medical interventions,” reads the order.

“It is a US policy to not fund, sponsor, promote, support or support the so-called “transition” of children and strictly enforce all laws that prohibit or limit these disruptive and life-changing procedures,” it continues.
The order not only directs federally operated insurance programs to cease funding these procedures, but also directs HHS to issue regulations that improve the health of minors with gender discomfort without blatant harm.
“Our duty is to protect the children of our country — not to expose them to unproven irreversible medical interventions,” Dr Jay Bhatacharya, director of the National Institutes of Health, said in a statement. “We must follow the gold standard of science, not the activist agenda.”
