Those who access the general handbook: Those who serve at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will find AI-driven search assistants that can be used to help them find the answer to their questions.
A general handbook is an online book of policies, directions and information for leaders and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The content of the handbook is prepared, updated and overseen by the first presidency and quorum of the 12 apostles.
“This search assistant can analyze user questions and summarise potentially relevant information in the handbook,” said a news release published on Friday, March 21st at churfjesuschrist.org. “As assistants are equipped with artificial intelligence (AI), users must use the links provided by the assistant to check the response.”
The AI Search Assistant is available for use in the Gospel Library app (version 7.2) and in the Churchofjesuschrist.org for general instructions handbooks online.
The Search Assistant button is located at the bottom right of the screen when viewing the content of the handbook. A summary answer and link will be available. Users can click to gain additional information and a deeper understanding of Church principles and policies.
This feature is available to anyone who is signed in with a church account and has access to the General Instruction Handbook in English, French, Portuguese, or Spanish.
Along with the release of the new AI-powered search assistant, the church has also announced the latest updates to its handbook (click here for more updates).
Principles that guide the use of church AI
For many years, senior church leaders have taught us about the blessings and dangers of modern technology, including artificial intelligence.
Last year, Elder Jerit W. Gong, a quorum of 12 Apostles, evaluated how church leaders are evaluating the optimal use of artificial intelligence as a tool to support continuous recovery.
“Through the continuous restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ, urgent techniques such as construction, communication and transportation have made this wonderful work possible to reach out, touch and touch all nations, their tribes, tongues and people.”
Elder Gong, who co-chaired the Church Communications Committee and joined by Elder John C. Pinley Jr., executive director of the 70-person governor of the Correlations Division, shared seven principles in four categories to guide the use of AI in the church.
The principles and categories pointed out by Elder Gong were approved by the First Presidency and a quorum of 12 people.
