On Tuesday, September 30th, 12 Apostles quorum Elder David A. Bednar visited the victims and was subjected to a fatal mass shooting that took place at the meeting hall of the Latter-day Saints’ Church of Jesus Christ in Grand Blanc, Michigan on Sunday, September 28th.

The visit was made by his wife, Sister Susan Bedner, Elder Allen D. Haney, 70 presidents of the Northeastern United States, and sisters Deborah Haney, who are recovering from injuries sustained during the attack at a local hospital.

Four people were killed and eight more injured after the shooter plunged the pickup truck into the side of the church and began shooting people inside. Police and witnesses said the shooter also poured gasoline and burned the building.

Elder Bednar described the victim’s determination as “surprising.”

“It was very kind to hear what happened during this episode, how they reacted, and the power and many miraculous episodes,” Elder Bednar said in a press release on Churchofjesuschrist.org.

The elder and sister Bedna also visited the destroyed chapel where the attack occurred. There he met members of local and federal law enforcement and was grateful for their work.

Meet with “faithful members”

He also spoke with members of Grand Branward.

“Even if I highlight just one lesson from this incredible day, the dedication of these loyal members makes me want to be more devoted to me, and the loyalty of these good people makes me want to be more faithful,” Elder Bednar said in a social media video posted Tuesday night.

Elder Bednar said he spoke to people about Jesus Christ. And by speaking with the members, he discovers that they have the ability to learn the tragic lessons that prepare them forever for the eternal perspective of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

“This is not easy to see beyond immediate separation, injury, and suffering – even separation by death – but solid and immobility, the foundation established in the Lord Jesus Christ, who are blessed and blessed, evident in their walks, their stories, and the spirits they spit out.

Elder Bednar continued to pray for these “good people” by inviting “all those who might hear this conversation.”

“They went through a lot, they were blessed with great appreciation,” he said. “There is still a lot they are experiencing and working, but with our prayers, their faith, and the influence of the Holy Spirit, these people continue to remain firm, immovable and true.”

Church statement from President Oaks

This one-day visit from the elder and sister Bednar follows a statement on the shooting from President Darrin H. Oaks, the quorum president of the 12 apostles, made on Monday, September 29th.

“The terrible tragedy that took place in Grand Blanc, Michigan on September 28th reminds us of our divine responsibility as followers of Jesus Christ,” the statement reads. “We will be lamenting with our members who have lost loved ones and joining in prayer for comfort with others around the world who are suffering from similar tragedy. We all seek answers and understanding in the wake of trauma, shock and sadness.

Bishop Jeffrey Schaub, bishop of Grand Blanc Ward, said in a video released on September 29th that he knows people around the world are praying “for our ward and our families.”

“It was the most important time of my life and I felt the love and prayer of others,” Bishop Shob said.
