Prayer to restore healing to broken friendship
Alicia Sarle

Bible Reading:
“My command is this. Love each other because I love you. There is no better person in Greater Love. It is to abandon your life for your friends. – John 15:12-14

Listen or read the following:

I quietly knocked on the doorJust open it and find a small bouquet of flowers and a card attached to them. My heart sank. Before reading the card, I knew exactly who it was. The questions flooded my heart. Would you like to respond? Do you want to open the card? Do I reach out and say, “Thank you?” This weight was very heavy The wound was still very raw.

Honestly, like this dear friend, I wanted things to come back like they used to, but we had reached a turning point in our friendship and knew we had to break up. The stab wounds of that friendship bothered me for a long time. I thought it would come with healing over time. Thankfully, that was the case. But, during that time I cried and prayed – lots! I asked God for the answer and I felt as if he was silent many times, but the truth is that when I opened his words, he filled me with hope. He met me on those precious pages and covered me with poems about friendship. From what means being good friends (Proverbs 18:24) and always being love (Proverbs 17:7) to how friends encourage and build one another (1 Thessalonians 5:11, Proverbs 17:17, and Bibles 4:9-10). In the end I realized that sweet friends were finally bringing us closer to God (Proverbs 27:9).

As I delved further into the Bible about friendship, I saw a warning about the bad company and the impact of our lives (1 Corinthians 15:33). All this made me think about how hurt and sad Jesus was when Judas, his own disciple, betrayed him. In one kiss, Jesus was led by Roman soldiers to his end. Jesus knew this was going to happen, but he still admitted betrayal (John 13:21), remained calm (John 18:4), and showed compassion (Matthew 26:50). Is this the kind of friend we are called to?

When friendship is hurt, betrayed or broken, do we acknowledge it, calm and compassionate? Yes, and yes! John 15:12-15 tells us to love others like Jesus, and we are called to do the same, including how Jesus loved his disciples, including those who denied him and doubted him, and betrayed him as followers. It’s not possible, right? Well, that’s right. At least there is no way to love us perfectly, not ourselves, but to be perfectly selfish. After all, we are incomplete and extremely flawed, but… we can lean on Jesus and ask for his wisdom, identification and guidance when friendship is broken and it is difficult to spread love.

If you are struggling with a torn and torn friendship today, take it to Jesus and ask him to give you peace. Then ask him to give you the opportunity to return his love to others.

Let’s pray:

Faithful Father, thank you for giving us your true words and extending your love to us in return. We know that you created us in such a unique and special way. I am so grateful that you gave me sweet friends to do this life. I pray that you are the kind of friend you are calling me. Help me to be considerate, give, kind and sincere. Father, you also know that I have the friendship and heavy burdens that require your healing hands. My trust was broken and I had pain that had acquired a deep wound. It is very difficult to even acknowledge the pain, remains calm and showing compassion. please help me. I need your wisdom and guidance on how to approach this friend with love. Help us find your direction as to where you’re going from here. Give healing in this friendship. It looks like a restorative peace to move on, or guarantees that it will continue to have a safer boundary. It will heal my heart, relieve wounds, and allow me to see and love this beautiful friend in your way. I ask all this in your precious son’s name, Jesus, Amen.
