In a deal announced late Tuesday night, CBS parent company Paramount agreed to settle with President Donald Trump for $16 million last October over compiling an interview with then-President Kamala Harris.

The move, which has become Paramount’s approach to blend with Skydance Media, marks the third major settlement Trump has made to a major media conglomerate since the 2024 election.

The funding will go to Trump’s Presidential Library Fund, not him or Texas co-public-private Rep. Ronnie Jackson.

According to the Washington Post, the lawsuit aims to hold CBS News liable for election interference under the Texas deceived CBS Trade Practices Act. The lawsuit alleged that the network was engaged in “malicious, deceptive and substantial news distortions” aimed at confusing, deceiving and misleading the public.

Just like the court filing on June 23, CBS continued to maintain that the lawsuit was “unworthy” and “to avoid the first amendment principles of Bedrock (attempted) First Amendment, by establishing that news organizations like CBS cannot be held responsible for the exercise of editorial judgment.

The lawsuit aimed to see how the network handled Kamala Harris’ responses during an interview that aired “60 Minutes” in early October 2024. In particular, one answer, including whether the Biden administration “shaking” through Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was aired on Sunday morning show “Face the Nation.”

The “Face the Nation” version was significantly longer, including more trademark ramblings that Americans have come to know and dislike candidates.

The network claimed that the clips were not clear and were edited for time.

The full transcript was released only in February, indicating that numerous Harris responses have been significantly compiled by the network, particularly with regard to Netanyahu.

Trump’s legal team said in a statement that his reconciliation as president represents “another victory for the Americans.”

The reported settlement is not merely financial. It also requires “60 minutes” to release a transcript of future interviews with presidential candidates.

The move comes from concerns from the left that CBS and Paramount could be handing Trump another victory.

The network wasn’t about solving cases from its own journalists, journalism advocates, and even members of the US Senate. In May, three Senate Democrats wrote to Redstone (who controls Paramount shareholder Shari). Redstone has notified that by resolving the lawsuit to smooth out the merger, the company may be at risk of violating the bribery law. It followed an earlier letter written by Senator Bernie Sanders (I-vermont). He argued that solving the case was a “significant mistake” that would “suspend” to “a dangerous move towards authoritarianism.”

Paramount shareholders, Press Foundation’s freedoms threaten to sue the company’s board of directors for potential settlements, claiming it will undermine the agency’s reputation and harm journalists.

However, CBS News staff had already anticipated a settlement was approaching.

“I know there’s a settlement, I know there’s money to be exchanged,” “60 minutes,” Leslie Stahl said on a May podcast.

ABC News settled with Trump in a 2024 interview. In an interview with GOP MP Nancy Mace, Trump allegedly claimed that he “takes responsibility for rape and trains victims of rape” in a lawsuit filed by writer E. Jean Carroll. Mistakes (repeated) that Trump was responsible, and the network eventually settled down with Trump for $15 million, heading back to his library.

Additionally, Meta (the parent company of Facebook and Instagram) has agreed to pay $25 million to resolve a lawsuit over Trump’s account suspension in the wake of Capitol Incursion on January 6, 2021. The money goes back to his library. Do I dare call it a big, beautiful library?

As for CBS News, what can we say other than the fact that this could not have happened to more people?
