overview
The first doctrine taught by missionaries is that God is a loving Heavenly Father of all people. And each truth is built on a foundational understanding of who each person is. Knowing that you are a child of God changes everything in your life. For example, Moses was able to protect himself from his enemies when he was told that he was the Son of Man (see Moses 1:11-13). In the sacramental prayer God is asked to be addressed as “Eternal Father.” When the identity of God is fully understood through prayer and by knowing that Jesus is the Christ, lives are radically changed.
pray first
Find time each day to be alone, pray, be quiet, and feel the promptings of the Spirit. Quiet and quick prayers become more meaningful when we strive to be “with God” each day. Heavenly Father desires to communicate with His children. As they seek to improve their communication with Heavenly Father, Heavenly Father will bless them with a sense of His presence.
Second, know that Jesus is the Christ.
The greatest demonstration of Heavenly Father’s love is that He sent His Son to help all of His children. Through Christ, all wrongs can be forgiven and corrected. Jesus Christ is a personal Savior for each person. Through Him all men can return to the Father. Those who seek Christ will come to know their divine worth.
reflection questions
What does it mean to you that God is a loving Heavenly Father?
Why is it important to know that Jesus Christ is your Savior and Savior?
What can we do to better seek the Savior?
How did you realize the role of Jesus Christ as Savior?
What does it mean to you that everyone you interact with is also a child of God?
speaker’s words
“We must seek confirmation vertically, not horizontally, so that we, too, can boldly proclaim, ‘I am a child of God.’” “Some of you may not have prayed in a long time, or you may not feel like your prayers are being heard. I promise you that your Heavenly Father knows you, loves you, and wants to hear from you. He does. He wants to communicate with you. He wants you to remember who he is.”
Reference scripture
“And my soul was hungry, and I knelt before my Maker, and cried unto him with mighty prayers and supplications for my soul. And all day long I cried unto him; yea, and when night came I still lifted up my voice so high that it reached the heavens.” “Ye are quick to do iniquity, but slow to remember the Lord your God. Ye have seen an angel, and he hath spoken unto you; ye have done so.” Sometimes; and he spoke to you in a still, small voice, but you felt that you could not feel his words. “Therefore, my beloved brethren, after you have entered this strait and strait path, I will ask you if all is finished.” Behold, I say to you, no. Because of your unwavering faith in Christ, relying entirely on the merits of a mighty God to save, you have not come this far except by the word of Christ. ”
invitation and promise
“Maybe we should shift our mindset from simply praying to taking enough time each day to really commune with God and ‘be with Him.’” “I promise you that Heavenly Father knows you, loves you, and wants to hear from you. He wants to communicate with you. He wants you to remember who you are.” “Learn about the divine relationship between the Father and each of us. Experience the song of saving love that reaches each of us personally through the Savior. Repent. As we come to know the ‘mighty One who saves’ (2 Nephi 31:19), we come to understand that as children of God we are God’s joy, His greatest focus, and each of us is truly worth saving.”
story
Elder Eyre’s daughter spoke with returning members during her mission. The member tearfully explained that he would lose his job and become homeless. His daughter first knelt beside the woman and wept with her. After the woman was comforted, her daughter used the scriptures to teach her about her divine worth. God repeatedly taught Moses about his divine heritage by repeatedly saying, “Moses…you are my son” (see Moses 1:1-11). Later, when the adversary tempted Moses, Moses was able to stand up and testify to his identity. While serving as stake president, Elder Eyre mistakenly refused to allow a ceremonial worker to serve in the temple. He called the temple chief and explained his mistake. The temple chief explained that there was nothing that could not be forgiven and eventually corrected.
